Tottenham Hotspur Eye Franco Baldini Led Swoop for Catania Striker Gonzalo Bergessio

Saturday, 3rd August, 2013

Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be pondering a move for Catania striker Gonzalo Bergessio, according to Tutto Mercato.

The 29-year-old Argentine striker is believed to be hot on the shortlist of Franco Baldini, who was appointed by the Spurs top brass as the club’s technical director just a few months ago.

And the admiration appears deserved. Sure enough, Bergessio’s record last season was an impressive 15 goals and six assists in 36 appearances for Catania.

Now the White Hart Lane outfit want to bring that kind of attacking power to London, despite the club having already reeled in Roberto Soldado from Valencia.

Such a move could certainly alert fellow Premier League side Southampton, who are believed to be keeping tabs on the striker as well, pondering convincing the Argentine to make St Mary’s Stadium his new hunting ground.

Bergessio, who has been a Catania player since 2011, has a contract with the Serie A club until 2015.

So if he's 29 in South America, does that mean he's actually 32?

Just out of interest, why should we rule him out because he's 29?

I want us to be taking risks on young upcoming players with huge ceiling potentials.

This guy is noway better than Defoe (from my limited viewing of him and just general knowledge).

Soldado/Defoe/New young striker is what we should be aiming for.

Not buying completely average players who are in their prime.

But he's an Argy and called Gonzalo. It would be bordering on rude not to sign him. Every team needs one after all.

Its not alien for Baldini to buy a 29 year old. Infact he bought a 30 year old Argentine Gabriel Batistuta for a then reord signing from Florentina to Roma - where he went on to lift the Scudetto.
But question is this guy anywhere near the level of Batistuta ?

How many goals did Defoe get last season mate? This guy got more goals than Ade and Defoe combined, and would probably want less than half of Defoe's wages.

I very much doubt it. I guess, for a nominal fee, why not. Would seem a very meh signing though. Only really makes sense if someone has offered us a tidy wedge for JD and he's open to more regular football or Ade is offski.

Still, just an article for now.
