Martin Jol says he is satisfied with our position at the turn of the year.

Seventh in the Premiership standings and still involved in all competitions, while the manager points out there is room for improvement, he believes the squad have coped well with the additional demands and are in a good position to make progress.

"Some people are suggesting that we are not doing well and comparing us with last season, but last time around we only played 40 matches in total and now we have already played 30," reasoned Martin.

"We have won six games in Europe and we are in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup. In comparison to last season I don't think there is a big difference, we are in seventh position and there are many good teams below us.

"Although there is still a lot of room for improvement - we are still building. We have the likes of Aaron Lennon, Tom Huddlestone, Calum Davenport and Benoit Assou-Ekotto for example, who are still learning their trade.

"I feel the future is ours, although I would sometimes like to see a little more bite if we are to get good results away from home. I wouldn't swap our players, but they need to add this to their game and is has to come from themselves."

With an FA Cup date in Cardiff looming on Sunday, Martin offered an injury update and is hopeful of one or two coming off the missing list very soon.

"Ledley has got some bone bruising on his foot that can heal quickly. We quickly assessed it and hopefully we have done the right thing. He has the famous plastic boot on, which he will be shedding soon and hopefully he can be playing again in one or two weeks time. We will have to wait and see.

"Aaron Lennon is back, training hard and could be available for Cardiff, but you can't be 100 per cent sure. Robbie Keane is also training hard and could be fit for selection.

"Paul Stalteri is still out with his thigh injury that is probably worse than we thought, but JJ is back working and could be back in one or two weeks time.

"Cardiff are doing well in the Championship and they've got good players who can score goals," he added on the challenge at Ninian Park. "They are at home, so hopefully there will be a good Spurs crowd there to support us.

"As everybody knows, we want to do well in the FA Cup because of the tradition of this club is connected with the competition.

"It would be wonderful to stay in all competitions, of course, but it can all change very quickly. Both teams will be chasing the win and hopefully we will have a few players back because it has been a busy time to be using the same players.

"We came through it well and that is positive for us, as would a good result in the FA Cup against Cardiff."

Think this one will be a tight game....... 1-1 and bring them back to the lane for a thrashing??!!

I woulnd't swap most of our players either!

    wahoo keano and lennon back.

can't wait for jenas to recover - i rate him so much more now then when he was actually playing! you dont miss it till its gone and all that. really excited about the hudd and jenas partnership developing for the rest of the season.

with king out we really need a CB in right now. Upson or davies will do fine.

I think our season so far has been as good as last season - but if we don't strengthen this window I think we will fall back

The injury list is still worrying - we sooo need a fit JJ or Lennon back - preferably both - and of course Ledley too - but it's in mid we seem to be weakest at moment

I think our season so far has been very good and it looks like we might have a full squad in 2 weeks. Last season we looked knackered in the latter stages of the season and were hanging on, this season with most of our top players still fairly fresh (Lennon,Jenas,Zokora,Keane,Mido) having not played much in the last 6 weeks we might have the edge in the business end of the season. My one worry is Ledley, in my opinion he is irreplacable, Davenport/Davis/Upson/Ferdinand are good players but not the class of our Captain. When he plays there is calm aswell as speed and ability at the back. Would like to see Ayala come in if possible but even he wouldnt fill the void.

Every time we lose, or draw a match that I think we should have won, I kick the cat and mutter obscenities, and I log on here and read how X or Y is totally useless and what an idiot BMJ is for putting that team out, and that makes me feel worse. Probably lasts about 10 minutes.

Then I remember back to the long dark years when I was studying the bottom half of the table with a lot more interest than the top half. It doesn't take much of a feat of memory.

I'm sure that most of you out there are the same as me, in that my expectations have risen from mid-table safety and maybe nicking a Cup, to Europe for sure, CL an outside chance, and silverware a real possibility on at least 2 fronts this year.

BMJ's right in my book - there is room for improvement of course, and we are still building - but if someone had offered us 7th at New Year in most of the last decade or more we'd have bitten their hands off. A few more clean sheets, which needs a fit Ledley or a purchase, and something more on the left and we are looking so good for the rest of this season. Then next year, who knows? There will be blips, but the future really is brighter than I can ever remember.

Of course, that doesn't bring much immediate comfort to the cat.

    That's a good post.

Incidentally, I saw your cat walking down the Holloway Rd with Thierry Henry the other day. They were saying something about free kick technique, but I couldn't catch all of it. I did hear the words "claws" and "goolies", though.

Indeed. A shit-hot replacement for Ledley while he has enough time off for all his niggling injuries to clear up, and we'll be sorted for years.

"They (cardiff) are at home, so hopefully there will be a good Spurs crowd there to support us"

am I right in thinking that we only requested half of the alloted tickets for this match?
  10. davidmatzdorf
No, I think it was a police thing, asking us to limit numbers and the club agreeing to their request. There's an item on the official site somewhere that explains it, but I'm sure it was a safety issue.
