Good Week
Andros Townsend
Given a chance in midweek, Andros excelled, scoring the opener and assisting the next two goals, and proved himself enough to earn a rare Premier League start for Spurs on Sunday.
I’m surprised whenever I read a rumour about Townsend leaving because he should be the type of player AVB likes – inverted winger who can cut in and shoot. Townsend also has a decent right foot, loves to dribble past opponents and has bundles of pace and a powerful running style. In the current tactics he would appear to be a better fit than the more orthodox Lennon.
Roberto Soldado
Make that four goals, all with one touch finishes. Now we are getting penalties, it’s nice to have a reliable penalty taker. Also impressing with his hard work, strength, and willingness to challenge against much bigger defenders.
Etienne Capoue
To be honest, I was a little underwhelmed when we signed the former Toulouse man. None of the other big boys had been impressed enough to buy him, and the only PL team he was linked to this summer before he joined us was Cardiff. We had Sandro coming back, Paulinho, and a defensive midfielder seemed to be the last thing we needed.
However, he looks like he might be one of the best signings. Strong, good tackler, positionally looks sound, plus he looks a pretty good passer (probably the best of the three who started at the weekend).
It will be interesting to see how AVB uses all the midfield resources at his disposal.
Younes Kaboul and Sandro
Younes played the full 90 in Georgia, while Sandro made his first PL appearance since January.
The reserves
With the 5-0 thumping in the first leg, Thursday’s game at the Lane gives the manager scope to make wholesale changes, give some game time to those coming back from injury, on the fringes, and a youth player or two. With the derby coming next weekend, expect most of the big names to sit the return leg out.
Bad Week
Levy and AVB
The only thing that went wrong this week was the Willian deal. AVB will be upset to have lost out on a player he has courted for so long, while Levy will be furious that he has been out-foxed.
While Chelsea have added yet another player to their crowded attacking third, we will need to look elsewhere for that No.10 (if we really need one) but with a very pissed chairman now desperate to show who is the master negotiator.
