Good Week
Luka Modric
Stunning goal against Bolton, and a great through ball for the third goal, the only issue is why can’t he do that more often?
Wingers
Against Bolton Bale and Lennon were key, setting three of the four goals. Against Villa the flanks were the main outlet, although they were not as effective. Makes it strange that there are no natural backups for Bale and Lennon currently at the club.
Harry Redknapp
When he saw the front page of The Sun upon Hodgson’s appointment Harry must have thought he had dodged a bullet. Sure the initial response would have been fully behind him, but eventually the knives would have been out.
Harry Kane
A great end to his loan stint at Millwall, voted young player of the year, and he travelled to Villa Park. Will next season see him more involved at Spurs, even if we are in the Champions League?
Bad Week
Jermain Defoe
Poor JD. He didn’t get a minute of action this week, which at Bolton wasn’t surprising but when your team needs a goal and you’ve been warming up for twenty minutes, and even stripped ready once only to be told to sit down again, to then see your manager finally make his first sub in the 90th minute and take off the second striker for a defensive midfielder, you must wonder where your career is heading.
Defoe splits opinion on SC, and while he isn’t world class he is our top scorer yet this season he has seen a loanee (Adebayor – understandable), a free, old crock (Saha – surprising) and a tough tackling midfielder (Parker – inexplicable) get ahead of him in the pecking order. His lack of game time might have been tempered by a promise from his club boss that when he took over as England manager he would be selecting JD for the Euros, but with Hodgson in charge and other players getting game time and form, JD looks to have a summer sat on the beach wondering where his future lies.
Danny Rose
I think it was about 70 minutes in – definitely second half – where Rose goes into a challenge that could be described as ‘robust’. As the furore over reckless challenges has died, and he won most of the ball, the incident escaped much attention but I did think he was a little fortunate to get away with it.
Four days later and Rose gets a red for a dangerous lunge. He might have been leant on slightly, which might have unbalanced him, but the challenge was OTT and as a young player trying to grab your chance, you don’t want to be missing games through suspension
Old Spurs managers
Some of you might have heard of the daytime quiz show pointless. On an episode last week the question was ‘name a manager who won the FA cup from 1970 onwards’. The aim is to give an answer that none of the 100 people surveyed gave (a so called ‘Pointless answer’), and both Keith Burkinshaw and Terry Venables were pointless answers. While other, more recent managers were also missed by the uninformed 100, it shows how quickly legendary managers are forgotten.
Us fans.
Typical bloody Spurs eh? All they have to do is beat a woeful Aston Villa team to finish third and mean that not only do we finish above Arsenal, but we don’t have to worry about what happens in Munich on the 19th. Despite dominating the team finds it incapable of putting the ball in the back of the net from open play, and a glorious opportunity to redeem themselves for the terrible form of the last few months goes sliding by. It’s the hope that kills you.
