If I lose my Fantasy Football league on the few points I have been wrongly deprive lost as a result of this outrage I will, frankly, be fuming. I am flying at the moment and cannot be dropping points in this manor. They better not take the first goal off him as well or heads will roll.:)

I couldn't believe it when the commentators didn't know the rule, it is a basic thing taught to school kids. Foy was the one in the wrong as he was watching very close to Vertonghen and should have over ruled the decision. I haven't seen anything said about Foy or the Lino but both need to be punished with lower league games for a while.

Pathetic decision. Disgusting that between the 2 officials they got that so horribly wrong. Everybody knows you cannot be offside when the ball is played and your in your own half. He was 5 yards onside

Should never run the line again at that level

I would go as far as to say "At ANY level" (y)

What has he said about the fact he was in his own half?
I read the comments not the blog. I know the offside rule. Have a glance he's having a proper go at some.
Ive just been back. From what i gather he thinks your offside even if your'e in your own half. Its not all that complicated. We dont get freekicks for offside in the opposition half. Says it all.

One funny thing I hadn't spotted...

When the free kick for Vertonghen's 'offside' was taken . It was ten yards inside the Sunderland half !

That was probably to cover up their obvious Fuck up... What would of been funny is if the sunderland player took it from inside our half and then got booked for moving the ball forwards from where the ref put it...

does everyone understand the rule? it is when the ball is passed to you, you are not offside if there is two players between you and the goal, or if you are in your own half. or in fact from a throw in too.
it doesn't mean anything where you are when you receive it, it's when it's played.
stating that as a few seem to not have a scooby.

Or from a goal-kick...

Having been there only now watching a full re run. The commentator that wasn't sure what the offside rule is, was Ray Houghton.

Therefore I would not pay what he said much heed, they guy doesn't know what country he is from.

Most annoying thing for me, being someone who doesn't want to flood the game with technology but begrudgingly acknowledging the need for it - one glance, less than a seconds glance in fact, of a replay for the fourth official and a *cough* down the mic into the ref's ear and the goal is allowed.

It seems insane that, in this day and age (score 1 for RSS in the "old man cliche" stakes), we can't have another FA appointed and accredited ref sat up in a room watching two screens - one live, one replays as shown to the press box - and if he see's any decision that is so blatantly incorrect, or if the ref requests of him, he can say yarp or narp before the crowd have even figured out what's going on.

The problem with introducing replay tech is that in a nonstop action game such as football, you have to account for the fact that players reaction to decisions made. It works in American sports because they do more sitting around and talking rather than actually playing, so there's time to review each play. I'll never forget an instance while playing when a referee called a handball in the box and a penalty on my side, our defenders stopped defending, the guy ran on to the ball and finished the goal as many do even after the play is ruled dead, and ruled it a fucking goal!! I was fucking INCENSED! I know you're supposed to play until the ball has stopped, but how often do we see defenders stop after plays have been ruled dead or flags go up? We'd have to see a massive reversal in mentality as it would force players to play until that ball stops if we were to introduce replay tech.

I'm not opposed to it as with big calls like this it would mean massive difference, but I think it would change the game too much (I love the nonstop flow of this game, it's part of what makes it unique) and I think an easier solution is to simply ensure that the world's top leagues just simply have better referees. There's just no excuse for some of the decisions we see at any level, much less this level. I don't know how they do it, but I think they should receive mandatory quarterly eye checks (these guys are mostly at least 50 years old) and more often recredentialing tests IMO.

All I'm going to say on the matter is thank fuck we was winning. If that had been to make it 2-1 I'd be absolutely seething. As it stands, I'm just laughing at their ridiculous error but had it been to win the game.......imagine the thead on here! Fuming!
