You've got to think his versatility will give him every opportunity to be a valuable player someday. If not for us, another team would likely pay well for that.

Boss Neil Redfearn believes a touch of tender, loving care is behind the transformation of Grant Ward from Rotherham United squad player to an attacking midfielder capable of striking fear into opposing sides.

Ward has been an ever-present since Redfearn took charge in October and the Millers manager revealed yesterday that the 20-year-old’s loan deal from Premier League Spurs will be extended from this month to the end of the season.

“I have given him a little bit more confidence, given him belief,” Redfearn said. “The big thing with young players is encouragement. You can squash them and lose them pretty quickly if they don’t feel like they have got that backing from the top.

“You have to let them find their way a little bit and you have to point them in the right direction.”

Ward was in and out of the starting 11 under Steve Evans but has since hit a rich vein of form which has coincided with Rotherham moving out of the Championship drop zone with five wins in 10 league matches and opening up a three-point gap between themselves and the teams in the bottom three.

The Millers face QPR at AESSEAL New York Stadium tomorrow looking to build on a run of three successive home wins which has seen them score eight goals and not concede any.

Ward is a certain starter, and Redfearn confirmed that right-back Shay Facey and Danny Ward are also fit for selection. Striker Ward took a kick in Tuesday’s 2-0 triumph over Brighton while Facey was withdrawn as a precaution in the second half because of a tight hamstring.

“For a young player, Grant has shown a lot of resilience,” Reddfearn added. “He has been in the middle of the 5-2 defeat against Ipswich and he was in the middle of the 4-0 win against Bolton, so he has been in the middle of both ends, which is fantastic experience.

“He gives you athleticism. He has got the confidence to pick up the ball between the lines and turn and get at defenders. We are trying to make him aware of his capability of scoring, I think there are more goals in him. His ability to get us up the pitch quickly is a big feature in how we are playing.”

I think I optimistically tipped him to be the surprise player to break into the first team squad by the end of the season, so pleased that at least he's making an impression out on loan. There's definitely something about the lad.

Interesting that he got another full game today in a 0-4 away win with the team now in really good form.

When Warnock first went in there it seemed like he went from being one of the first 11 to just a sub option but over the weeks he now seems to have worked his way back in.

You would think that might be quite a good experience for a young player. Would be lovely if we could turn him into a first team option.

I like everything I read about this kid, but I've seen nothing of him. What is he? If he came into the first team squad next year, who would compete with? Has he got the defensive nouse to play Dier's role? Or the ball retention to play Dembele's? Is he intelligent enough to compete with Eriksen, or does he have Alli's ability to deliver?

He's a proper utility man. Started out as a FB/W then went to the US,played mainly on the RW I believe but maybe moved around too. Came back started playing DM for our u21s and that's where I was impressed with him. Then he has gone back out on loan and played everywhere, even no.10 and impressed so he is very much an allrounder, I wouldn't say he has any of those qualities above

Has played CM, DM, AM, LM and RM this season apparently. And you say he's played FB as well in the past. Has he every played as a CB or a Striker lol?

Can't see how he'll ft in our squad but delighted for him, would love for another academy player to come through but just struggle to see it, though I reckon Poch will give him a try out in preseason

Yeah, it willl be tough for him now, but, as you say, I'm sure poch has had his spidey sense twinged on this one and will at least wanna have a decent look.

Could always loan him back to R'ham until January or a more stable champioship team?
