Alan Hansen: Tottenham's talents mean fifth place can only be seen as a disappointment.

Despite their defeat at Old Trafford, Tottenham still look better equipped than any of their rivals to become the team who finally break the stranglehold on the Champions League places.

The sooner they do it, the better, though, because if they fail this season, they will find getting there becomes ever more difficult.

There is a vast chasm between fourth and fifth that does not exist, say, between fifth and sixth. Finishing fourth represents a fantastic campaign, increasing a club's revenue streams and enabling the manager to go out and buy better players. Fifth can be seen only as a disappointment.

Though both Spurs and Manchester City, their closest challengers, have the look of sides who could become realistic, regular challengers for both the top four and even the Premier League title over the next few seasons, at the moment it is Harry Redknapp's side who are the more impressive.

They have the better players, the better team and their strength in depth is as good as there is in the league, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal included. City have spent a significant sum to build a side, but they still seem a mishmash of talented players with not many who would qualify for inclusion in the very top bracket in world football.

That will change, though, especially if it is City who qualify for the Champions League. It has cost Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan around £200 million to take his team to the brink of the top four, but actually achieving it may tempt him to have a real go at toppling the established order.

There could not be a better time to do that, as the top four are not as good as they once were – that can be seen by how many times each has lost this season – and it is an opportunity City would not want to miss.

Regardless, such is their financial power that it is just a matter of time before someone gets it right at Eastlands. That will be a problem for everyone, and that is why it is of such importance that Spurs hold on to fourth place.

Alone among the eight or so clubs with aspirations of finishing in the top four, Tottenham could start next season with a very similar squad to the one they have now and still keep pace with their rivals. They should also be encouraged that their success this season has been based around a core of players Fabio Capello may choose to call upon for his England squad this summer.

Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch will definitely be selected by the Italian, while you would expect Aaron Lennon to join them. Tom Huddlestone has been mentioned in dispatches, and Michael Dawson has enjoyed a better season than most of his rivals for a centre-back berth.

The most exacting conundrum Capello faces, though, concerns Ledley King. Though his quality cannot be questioned, it is a difficult decision to take a player so susceptible to injury that he cannot train with his club for fear of aggravating his knee problems.

With doubts over Rio Ferdinand's fitness, it would be placing your fate in the lap of the gods to take a player with such injury problems, but – against my better judgment – I would put him on the plane, simply because he is streets ahead of the alternatives.

As well as Ferdinand's back, there are concerns over John Terry's form, which has been indifferent this season. Taking King, a player who could have been a regular were it not for his injury problems, as cover is a risk, but it is one worth taking.

"but they still seem a mishmash of talented players with not many who would qualify for inclusion in the very top bracket in world football"

They probably have more than we do in that category. It's just that we have a more balanced team with more depth. Nothing that another £200m won't fix next season for them.

Will be screaming for Villa this weekend. If they can beat City, we're home and dry (he says, tempting fate). So glad they got that last minute winner against Brum - gives them a real incentive to throw everything into this weekend's match.

No, I think they just have Tevez really. Adebayor is very good when he wants to be and the Angolan tragedy aside, he was poor once winter came along. Remember the match at the Lane? Vieira is clearly no longer the player he was and I can't think of any others. I think we need that intangible, 'world class' quality up front; a Tevez, RVP, Rooney, Drogba, a fit Torres etc.

No idea where to find it though much less how to afford it.

Apart from Villa then being possibly 3 points ahead of us? Draw please!

Do not want Villa winning, definite 0-0 for me and we have to break Bolton down who will play like Wolves etc with 5 across the midfield, something we have struggled to do at times this season.
  6. Crabby
Oh and both games ko at 3pm so provided we win we'll retain 4th regardless of the City Villa game

Bollocks are we 'home and dry'.

We still have to win our matches.

Too many mugs on here thinking we just have to turn up against Boltion and Burnley.

    WOLVES (x2), STOKE, HULL, PORTSMOUTH.

    Will certain people never learn?
  8. Shirtfront
I don't think we just have to turn up. I believe that we will beat Bolton and Burnley. If you think otherwise, that's fine. But it sure as hell doesn't make me a mug.

Show the hypocrisy of Hansen. All season long he has claimed that Liverpool and Man City are superior to us and one of them was going to finish fourth ahead of us (along with his repeated claim of "Tottenham always let you down"). Now he says we are too good a team to have missed out on 4th. The key to this season was progression and improvement which we have been successful in achieving. 4th place would be a bonus.

we want villa to beat man city on sat.with our goal difference it would mean we can beat bolton, lose to city and beat burnley for 4th place.if it was a draw, man city then could beat us and win there remaining game and finish 4th.so a villa win helps us on sats, provided we beat bolton of course!
  11. Yidoinoz
    spot on
  12. nferno
exactly! villa cant beat us on gd unless they score 10 in their next 2 games without coneding any... cmon villa tear man shitty a new one!
  13. StokeSpur
Dude, did you not know that if Villa beat brum they would be joint 4th? and if they beat City they will be 3 points ahead of us if we lost.

We really needed Brum to win that game, we need villa & city to draw, if either of them win the preassure on us will be massive.

I believe that we are a different team now to that that lost to wolves/stoke etc, i think we have a confidence & belief about us but, and its a BIG BUT, Harry has got to play to our strengths and must not make a repete of the cocked up team selection that he put out at Manyoo, we must not be scared, we must play Bale on the LW and give them problems!
  14. UncleBuck
Wins against Citeh, Bolton and Burnely will mean we get 4th spot.

It's in our hands so bollocks to everyone else and their results
  15. blanchflower1963
talking of Villa, David Villa anyone?
  16. StuckinPoland
barring goal scoring villa miracles only two teams have control of their destiny. us and man city. therefore, the best result for tottenham on saturday is...

villa beat man city. we beat bolton.

it really is that simple. a draw between the two eliminates neither city nor villa. but if city lose then only tottenham can really say they're "in charge" of the situation.

if it does come down to us needing to win our last game away from home, how many of us wouldn't have picked burnley to be that opposition? easy it isn't. but easier? not in the premier league !
  17. Shirtfront
Well, that's still one more than us. I would include Robinho as well and Adebyor as better than anyone we have in those positions.
  18. bigspurs
Yeah I was lucky enough to be at the Stoke and Wolves games, so I am expecting to see a better performance this time!!!
