Tottenham vs Everton transfer scrap over Harry Maguire looms following Hull's relegation

The central defender is set to leave this summer and Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman both want him

Tottenham and Everton are locked in a £22million tug-of-war over Hull City defender Harry Maguire.

Rival managers Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman both rate the 24-year-old centre-half highly – and each want to sign him as soon as the summer transfer window opens.

Maguire recently said he wouldn’t think about his future until the Tigers ' Premier League fate had been decided.

But with the Yorkshire club now relegated back to the Championship after a season in the Premier League and boss Marco Silva having quit to join Watford, Maguire has decided on a move to stay in the top flight.

Spurs scouts have been keeping close tabs on Maguire this season and have recommended to Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy that they pursue a deal amid ongoing doubts about Kevin Wimmer, who has made little progress since his £4.5m arrival from German club Cologne two years ago.

But Everton are also strong contenders to sign Maguire with boss Koeman — like Pochettino, a centre-back in his playing days — now unsure whether he can land Burnley defender Michael Keane, as he is also on the radars of Manchester United, the player's boyhood club, and Liverpool.

Maguire is attracted by the prospect of Champions League football with Tottenham.

But with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen their established centre-half pairing he knows he may get a more regular start at Everton, who enter the Europa League next season in the third qualifying round.

I really don't think he'd be a smart purchase. Maybe if it were half that rumored price (which is totally possible given the source).

As somebody who once said, "I'd sooner player Fazio in CM than Wanyama" - I'd sooner play Harry Winks at centre back than Maguire. The guy is so average.

The name of Maguire crops up and Spurs Community are unanimous in their response...

Have heard some of our fans rip into him for some reason.

Is strong, has decent speed to him (he's not as slow as people make out) good at passing the ball out of defence and everytime I see him he looks fully committed which is what Poch wants

Wouldn't be sad if we get him

Speed once he gets going maybe. Doesn't seem to have the agility or acceleration.

What a load of nonsense. Question other aspects of his game, but he's no slower than Vertonghen or Alderweireld. His pace won't be a problem if we sign him.

I think he's talented, good at bringing the ball out from the back, but have question marks how he'd cope playing higher up the pitch with space in behind.

Really like him. Good footballer, not a great deal of pace but a leader too. Our centre backs aren't the quickest and they manage very well.

Only two teams conceded more goals in league football than Hull last season. Rotherham and Leyton Orient. I realise he isn't solely responsible but I think we should be looking elsewhere.

You could have said the same thing when we took Trippier from relegates Burnley.

I like Maguire and wouldn't mind having him here as a rotational CB. He's as close as we're goign to get to Vertonghen in terms of carrying the ball out from the back - he really is exceptional in this area - and I wouldn't have thought he's that much slower than Vertonghen either.

If we're selling Wimmer then getting Maguire in as a replacement makes a lot of sense.

A good backup Center back IMO.... I don't see us spashing the cash on Keane and keeping him on the bench...

Hopefully we can get him for around 15 to 18M and a decent wage. I think 22 is pretty expensive but....

Everton do have the spending power.... I am hearing rumours Lukaku could be sold for 70+ and Barkley 40+. They do have the fund to over pay.

I would like to see 2 Center backs as backup in the squad. We can always have Dier-Jan-Toby and Wimmer-Maguire-CCV as the alternate back 3.

I guess it depends what our dominant formation will be next season. We could well return to a 4 at the back system.
