Why would we spend a load on him when he has the same deficiencies as CCV, namely lack of pace and slow on the turn. Though he played on the left side for England, that doesn't mean a thing as he has no left foot at all. All he excelled at were the headed goals for England. Remember the semi-final against Croatia? When under pressure he just blindly whacks the ball that immediately was collected by a Croat to put further pressure on England.

He'll cost upwards of 40 million now and I'd prefer to bring along Foyth and CCV.

Pace is one of my concerns as well. Or more specifically, a real lack of agility coupled with ball handling skills which Poch likes in his defenders.

He'd definitily give us some strength in the air at both ends of the field like Toby has but he's quite deficient in other areas which may not make his as suitable.

I'd rather bulk up Foyth as he has tons more potential & he reads the game well.

Furthermore, he won't cost us as much as he's already ours.

If it wasn’t for that World Cup, would we be wanting Pavard...?

I didn't watch German league so this is first I seem of him, but saw plenty of Maguire to think he wouldnt really add to the team.

If we play a back 3 and are certain of losing Toby he would add a lot. No pace but very good on the ball and very strong in the air. Capable of carrying it out from the back and very organised at the back.

No way on earth we can get him though.

He could be useful, but in all honesty I don't think he's all that. He's good, but it would definately be a meh (not fussed either way) signing for me.

As per usual on here, if we sign him he's amazing but If he signs for another club he's not all that anyway!

I'd image it could only happen If Toby goes to Man U for 50+ and that doesn't look likely now

IMO James Tarkowski was every bit as good as Maguire last season but he got injured and didn't make the World Cup if I remember right. Maguire has had massive hype since Russia and would cost a fortune whereas Tarkowski (who is pretty similar i.e. rather immobile lump who likes to defend) is completely off the radar.

Leicester were one of the 5 worst defenses in the league last year, is he really that good or are a couple headers off some corners at the World Cup making people think he's better than he actually is?

Before the WC, England’s defence was often noted as being the weakest link in their chain. Let’s be honest, against better sides we looked brittle at times. He’s an ok player, but there’d be a notable drop in quality if we replaced him for Toby

I don't follow as much as you do but I figured people thought the midfield was weaker than the defense, doesn't matter regardless but those were my thoughts.

I agree with you though.

Switching to a back 3 sorted out a lot of the frailties IMO.

To be fair though, there are only a handful of players in the world where there wouldn't be a notable drop in quality if they replaced Toby, so if we do have to replace him, we're probably going to have to accept that drop.

Manu fans in redcafe are also discussing about Maguire, apparently he's more linked with them. Hopefully it means new contract for Toby?

I’d love it if Man Utd spent £65 million on him and not us. Not that I think he’s a bad player, I just don’t think he’s champions league quality.

I'm quite happy for United to continue having a quiet transfer window. They've signed a (apparently very good) midfielder for a lot of money, but otherwise not addressed their ageing full backs, so-so centre backs and lopsided attack.

They signed the kid from Porto for RB cover.

An alternative view - would Kasper Schmeichel be thought of as highly if his dad (and thus surname) was Vinnie Jones instead?
