I'm not even that sure there's all that much in it. All the goat says is that there's interest. We know we had interest a year ago too. I imagine it's just one of many defenders we're keeping an eye on rather than something we're going all in for.

Could be to utilise a back 3.

I agree with the logic.

But a back 3 means one less of our AMs - Sonny, Moura, Lamela, Dele - makes it onto the field.

With 3 CBs, 2 WBs and a holding C/DM (Dier or Wanyama), and assuming Eriksen and Kane are always in the team when fit, then there are only 2 outfield places left.

And that's before we (hypothetically) sign another attacking player - eg Martial/Zaha - and another CM eg Kovacic.

Plus the latest ITK suggests Dembele may be staying, and there are no offers for Toby.

Very underrated player. Saying he’s overhyped based on a good World Cup is extremely unfair - he’s had a great 18 months for both Hull and Leicester. His awkward look on the ball seems to rub a lot of people up the wrong way, but he’s an extremely good defender, and genuinely good on the ball despite aesthetics. Surely out of our price range though, as there’s no denying you’d have to massively overpay to pry him away from Leicester right now.

I don't want us to play a back 3, but maybe that's the reason for the signing. Having Vertonghen, Sanchez, Maguire and Foyth playing with Dier as an extra CB option.

this link makes me cringe no way is this a deal we could close imo
Personally see our ‘interest ‘ as a smoke & mirrors exercise to ripple across the footballing world so we can grab Pavard or a n other

Why would we spend a load on him when he has the same deficiencies as CCV, namely lack of pace and slow on the turn. Though he played on the left side for England, that doesn't mean a thing as he has no left foot at all. All he excelled at were the headed goals for England. Remember the semi-final against Croatia? When under pressure he just blindly whacks the ball that immediately was collected by a Croat to put further pressure on England.

He'll cost upwards of 40 million now and I'd prefer to bring along Foyth and CCV.

There's like a minimal chance this will happen IMO. We saw how stubbern they were with Mahrez before can't see this being any different, if anything it will be harder and wayyyyyy too expensive.

I'd rather trust Foyth than fork out a huge amount on Maguire who (IMO) wouldn't be a good fit in our high line defense.

I don't see how it makes sense for Maguire.

He is a pretty solid CB who is just coming off a great season and a strong WC.

In that case most players are looking to get major pay jumps and (especially given that he is only 25) get into a side where they are playing regularly.

If he came to us it seems unlikely he would get some massive pay increase and unless we were to shift to a back 3 (which takes out an attacking option, that we are supposedly trying to add to this summer) he would be an rotational option for us. Doesn't seem like a tremendous career option for him.

I could see him moving from Leicester but would think someone like Everton, Pool or Arse would be more likely to offer him money and playing time.

For us, it wouldn't be an exciting signing but would be an excellent depth addition especially if we move Toby.

Give it a rest

Why? I dont rate him at all. We had this discission during the England games in the wc thread. Do not suit our style of play at all and are a quite crappy defender imo, would much rather give Foyth the chance if this is the level of our cb targets.

If it wasn't for that world cup, would we be wanting him? In all honesty I would rather keep Toby if Poch forgave him.

Or get Pavard

If it wasn’t for that World Cup, would we be wanting Pavard...?

I'd much rather we hold onto Toby and reevaluate our options after we lose him next summer for 25m, than sell Toby for 35-40m this summer and massively overpay for Maguire.

Probably interested as the link was in the press earlier in the season (see Pavard thread). But to your bigger point and response to the @ parj we have pre-established interest in Maguire also.
