With Wayne Rooney not selected for the squad against Scotland is it time perhaps for Harry Kane to be given the role of Captain ?. Granted he's only played 17 times for his country but perhaps now is the time and opportunity for him to mature into a full and long term international star.

So should Southgate hand him the armband or does he need a few more caps under his belt ? (caps under his belt sounds bizarre)

Personally I think he would relish the chance and prove to be an inspiring leader for England, especially in the 2018 World Cup.

I think he could be an inspirational captain, of this I have no doubt. I also feel it will be a popular choice among the rest of the squad.

I thought Southgate had talked about Kane as a future captain - but hasn't Cahill worn it in Rooney's absence?

Southgate said last week that he plans on changing it around during the season and not having one particular captain, which is a good idea because no one should be guaranteed a place in the team if they're playing shit or not playing at all (Rooney).

Kane is a leader. He speaks a lot of sense and apart from that thing he does where he makes a weird noise when trying to pronounce anything beginning with a 'K' or hard 'C', he comes across very well during interviews. He's ultra ambitious and always talks about captaining Spurs and England so I can definitely see him being given the armband sooner rather than later. If not captain then vice captain for now...

Why do supporters have this thing that if a player is good or popular, he should automatically be captain whether club or country?

Not that I remember but to be honest he was the main striker at U21's until his last couple of appearances

There was a period where he played off or to the right of Berahino(who was the main striker)

I cannot think of two better qualities than being 'good' and 'popular' for the role of captaincy. Never seen a successful one that wasn't. It's not a question of 'automatically be captain'. Rooney is not in the squad so someone needs to be given the position. The question was is it the right time for Harry Kane or not ?......I say Yes.

Good on him if he gets it. Ideally a captain should be in midfield or defence. The fact that we (England) have no obvious choices in those positions tells you a lot about how young the squad is and how much work Southgate has to do.

I prefer centre backs or the more defensive midfielder to have captaincy myself.

Well, leadership comes to mind...

That's an interesting term but undoubtedly any form of positive "leadership" requires the mutual respect of the team members...otherwise it becomes a dictatorship and to coin an awful media term 'the dressing room is lost'. To me a good captain has to show leadership skills and two of those ingredients are to be popular with your squad and also have the footballing prowess to prove your inclusion in the team is merited on playing ability also. By popular I don't mean an easy touch but more in the manner that Poch handles the players....they love him to bits but they also respect his decisions and usually accept them. 'Leadership' is not really a quality as it can be both good or bad...it is a power given to someone and whether or not they abuse that privilege is their decision. That is why to my mind, with Harry being both popular and skilful he should be given the captaincy in order to enhance and improve his leadership qualities.

Just a thought.....
