That's an interesting term but undoubtedly any form of positive "leadership" requires the mutual respect of the team members...otherwise it becomes a dictatorship and to coin an awful media term 'the dressing room is lost'. To me a good captain has to show leadership skills and two of those ingredients are to be popular with your squad and also have the footballing prowess to prove your inclusion in the team is merited on playing ability also. By popular I don't mean an easy touch but more in the manner that Poch handles the players....they love him to bits but they also respect his decisions and usually accept them. 'Leadership' is not really a quality as it can be both good or bad...it is a power given to someone and whether or not they abuse that privilege is their decision. That is why to my mind, with Harry being both popular and skilful he should be given the captaincy in order to enhance and improve his leadership qualities.

Just a thought.....
"Popular" has nothing to do with Leadership.

Respect <> Popular

Players need to respect the Captain - they don't have to be best mates. But, more specifically, the captain must earn the respect of the players. Skill and talent alone are not sufficient. Things like strong work ethic, ability to motivate others, and be able to lead by example.

"Leadership" is absolutely a quality - it is not a "power" - Kane is a leader on this team - and has been since the dust up with Adebayor - but it has nothing to do with a title, or being popular, or being skillful. And, you don't give someone a captaincy to become a leader, you give a leader the captaincy.

Having said that, Kane will be a future captain - because he is a leader. That could come as early as this summer, but likely at some point prior to next summer.

Donald Trump was democratically given leadership over his country...in other words democratically given the right to 'lead' his people. That isn't a quality it's a bestowal of power....when you appoint a captain you are giving him leadership....(power..control..call it what you will)...how he handles that is dependent on his personal qualities...two essentials of which, I believe are popularity (inclusive of respect as I mentioned in my previous post about Poch) and ability. What if Sissoko had superb leadership skills (useless footballer though) ? would you still play him and have just ten men in the team kicking the ball ?.

Having said that, Kane will be a future captain - because he is a leader.

I believe Harry should be appointed Captain now in order to understand how to become a good leader...not because he already is one. We shall agree to differ on this subject....good banter though !

Southgate isn't one to select a permanent captain - he will do it game by game. And I think he will give it to the most senior player on the pitch.

How are you using Trump to back up your argument?
  1. He didn't win the popular vote (Hilary Clinton did)
  2. He has the lowest approval rating of any US president ever (i.e. least popular president ever).
  3. He is in the process of p*****g off the entire civilised world
I'll leave you with this, just to prove how inspirational a leader he is (1:25-1:50): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSLyFiHOC5I

I didn't say he was doing a good job...I said he was democratically elected. Read this headline :

Please don't try and drag me down this path...the point was about empowerment not Trump's suitability for the role of President.(n) read it again....sheesh !

Having spent some 25 years in the regular army and 10 years in the TA, my experience with those holding rank is that being good at what they do and gaining the respect of those they are in control of is paramount. It is never a certainty from the outset that anyone given a position of authority will do the job successfully, however, knowing that person is good at the job and is well thought of by his colleagues is a good starting point.
My main concern is that anyone appointed, if they are not coming up to scratch at it, they should be removed. I have grave doubts that Lloris is showing great captaincy skills from between the sticks and would not be averse to seeing him replaced as captain on the field. I agree with a previous post that usually it is better from a more midfield position, but I would not be averse to Harry being given a trial as he has shown in previous games he trys to gee up the players around him.

Love it. That will really fucking annoy the haters.

Awaits:

He's too young.
He looks funny
He talks funny
He hasn't done it in a tournament.
He plays for Spurs and Spurs are shit.
He doesn't play for Liverpool therefore should not wear the captain's armband.

Some people are born to be leaders and Harry is one of those. From the first time I saw him his determination and drive shone through. He deserves this chance as I think he is the best man for the job among the current squad. Not that I am in any way biased. lol

Good call Krule

Thanks...it's a shrewd decision and one that Harry will relish. Personally I think he will mature more and more into the position with each match and that we are now laying down a blueprint that will stand us in good stead for many years to come. He has an old head on his shoulders and does not seem to be distracted by the temptations his ability and potential earnings normally offer to one as young as himself.
He is a perfect example to any young footballer trying to become a professional star and I have nothing but appreciation and respect for the manner in which he conducts himself both on and off the pitch.

He's one of our own and we should be extremely proud of that statement. Well done Harry ....give the jocks hell !

Delighted for Harry. His transformation is nothing short of amazing. I also think he should go for Prime Minister.
