I think greavsie or kane is a fairer comparison. The differences being Greavsie and the double winning team were just that an exceptional side of double winners. The early 80s side were pretty good cup winners local, and european. Then the contentious one, the current team. They come 3rd because they have yet to win stuff. Maybe the 4th best team was our 1st serious foray into CL with bale in it. All of them good times.

Saw a thing by Michael Parkinson where he said there's never been a footballer fit to tie George Best's boot laces and my immediate thought was that he'd never seen Jimmy Greaves play. Hoddle was a fabulous player but Jimmy G was a different level. Absolute genius.

Why compare an out and out striker to a midfielder? Makes no sense to me. Both were marvellous players.

Impossible to choose for me but i did and it was hoddle. Poetry with a football is the best i can describe him.

What people don't realise is that although there is some footage to view from the time of greaves what is seen barely scratches the surface of his career as maybe only one in fifteen or sixteen of his matches were cameras present.
Just ask the older people about that goal at Leicester or that goal at Newcastle they will know what I am talking about but sadly no film record and this was Jimmys career littered with great goals but only a few available to be watched by the younger fan.
I think that many would say that Greaves goal against Man unt was his best but I can tell you he scored untold goals as good or better and I speak as a fan who in his youth went to all home games and the majority of away games.

No competition. Hoddle was a good player but not as good as Ardiles alongside him, in fact Ossie made the team play.

Greaves on the other hand was the greatest British goalscorer I have ever seen

This is an unfair poll.
In order to have seen Greaves at his best you would need to be at least 60 years old!
I would imagine that the majority of posters are between 10 and 20 years younger, and couldnt in all fairness have seen Greaves inhis majestic pomp.
Im over 70 so feel able to comment fairly
Greaves was without doubt the finest striker i have ever seen worldwide, and whilst Hoddle was the best ever mid field player for Spurs i have seen many other midfielders who were on a par .
However without doubt they were both the best Spurs player in their positions, but for me Jimmy edges it.
Unfortunately you are right- I am 66. Greaves was the best there was. As good as, Maradonna, Messi, & Ronaldo if not better. Hoddle was like Cruyff - just unbelievably good. The best striker and the best midfielder to ever play for us. We should not really put one above the other.

Greaves wasn't in the double winning side.

It's an unfair poll because it's like comparing apples to strawberries, or wingers to goalies. One's a striker and the other a midfielder. Neither is 'better' than the other.

All I can say is that both were absolute geniuses with the ball. Jimmy is (and will remain) the greatest goalscorer in English football history, and Glenn the greatest midfielder Tottenham & England ever had.

The first time I visited WHL, I was 9 years old and it was the same day as Greavesie made his debut against Blackpool, scoring a hat trick. That was me, hooked. December 16th 1961 is a day I'll never forget.

Every comparrison is unfair for whatever reason and everyone can have an opinion. I can say a table is better than an orange and give reasons for my view. Doesn't mean that someone else can't have a different opinion and reasons to back it up.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter, it's just a bit of fun to waste time.

I can’t vote on this. I really can’t. I have seen both players live over many years at the Lane. A few meters away at times enough to see the sweat rolling down their faces. There’s a cats whisker between these two. Different players, different roles. Different eras. Both world class. Both Spurs royalty. Nuff said.

Can't argue with any of that.

The first game I ever saw as a nipper was Spurs v Liverpool in 1963. Billy Nick v Bill Shankly.two very fine teams full of household-name players.

Jimmy G scored four and Spurs won 7-2.

Another day at the office for Mr Greaves and I was hooked for life.

Spurs top three players I’ve been lucky enough to see, in order of sheer heroic magnificence:

1 Dave Mackay
2 Jimmy Greaves
3 Glenn Hoddle.

Exalted status when you consider some of the implausibly brilliant players we’ve had over the years, including one or two in the current team.
