He's gonna have to! He needs some games under his belt so with luck we can dominate some of these games, such as Colchester and Norwich, to help him get his feet under the table.

Looks a good young player and think he can do the job.
What you miss the most is the understanding Toby and Jan have.....knowing where the other will be without lookin.....that's the thing you can't cover for.

However I expect there will be some bum twitching moments but think he's more than capable of filling the gap.

Let's not expect too much too early though. Unfortunately we'll have to accept a settling in period with the premier league games. DM's will have to try extra hard to cover until he adjusts.

Wimmer has done well so far, but we are bound to be less solid in Jan's absence. We will miss the Belgian brothers and their perfect understanding at the back, but hopefully it will not make the wheels come off our league campaign.

He's the best young Austrian central defender in world football.

as sarcastic as you meant to be, he's not really even that. Austria usually play Martin Hintergger at centre half (3 months older than Wimmer).

i personally think Hinteregger is a thug in football boots, but Austria's manager prefers him and, given their recent record, who am I to argue?

but i will say this

I sometimes commentate on the German 2nd division for BWIN and, in 2013/2014, Wimmer was the best defender in Cologne's title winning campaign. he more than held his own the following season when Cologne finished a creditable 12th and only conceded 40 goals in 34 games (only two more than 2nd placed Wolfsburg).

when he signed for Tottenham, i was overjoyed. on a personal level, i actually think he's better than Vertonghen. he's stronger, both physically and mentally, and is therefore less liable to concentration lapses. the one thing he lacks is the understanding with Alderweireld that Vertonghen clearly has (after years of playing together at Ajax, Belgium and now with us). That will obviously be hard to replicate straight away, but I have absolutely no doubt that Wimmer is more than good enough to deputise for Vertonghen.

(btw, despite the handle, i have been living in Vienna for around 10 years. i know a little bit about Austrian football).

I agree that he may prove better than Vertonghen.
Does anyone think that Chadli could fill in as back-up striker?

In the few games he's played he's been virtually flawless. We look to have a real player on our hands here.
