Martin Jol is interested in taking Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone to Hamburg as a replacement for Manchester City-bound midfielder Nigel de Jong.

Jol accepts he is destined to lose Dutch international De Jong to City for £18million but has been promised the funds to find a replacement this month.

The former Spurs boss is a great admirer of Huddlestone, 22, comparing him to Franz Beckenbauer during his time at White Hart Lane.

Jol also claimed he was the best player of his type and age in Europe and suspects his style may be well-suited to the continental game.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is poised to spend £14m on Wigan midfielder Wilson Palacios and is under pressure to generate cash if he wants to carry on spending.

Redknapp has earmarked Jermaine Jenas, David Bentley and Darren Bent as players with potential to command decent money but may be tempted by an offer for Huddlestone, who has been monitored closely by Blackburn and Everton in recent months.

Huddlestone was a firm favourite of Redknapp’s when he first arrived at the club but has now seen his place in midfield taken by Didier Zokora.

Palacios, meanwhile, travelled to London last night for talks over a move to White Hart Lane and further discussions are planned for this morning.

Spurs have agreed the fee with Wigan, which will be paid over two years after a request to spread the payments over four years was rejected.

Palacios, 24, will be offered the chance to more than quadruple his £7,000-a-week wages at the JJB Stadium in return for overcoming misgivings about moving to the capital.

Spurs also remain interested in signing Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper to provide competition for Heurelho Gomes.

Redknapp is not convinced by reserve keepers Ben Alnwick and Cesar Sanchez and the Spaniard could be offered the chance of a return to his native Spain, with Espanyol and Valencia interested.

All true, to be fair. I'd say Barca's Rafael Marquez is the closest thing to Beckenbauer atm, but that's another story. BMJ does love the Hudd (and who wouldn't?) and rightly admires his vision and range of passing from deep in midfield.
For exactly these reasons, I'd want to keep him as he's the closest there is to a natural successor to Michael Carrick - not just at Spurs but in the game.

I'd prefer us to play in the continental set-up that BMJ had with a deep-lying playmaker (Carrick/Hudd), Jenas bombing on and Keano, Defoe or Modric playing off Mido/Pavlyuchenko up front. For that, The Hudd is pretty essential. Very odd feeling, agreeing with something in the Mail. Mind you, if it's praising TH..

Great news. If it happens - and it hasn't yet, apparently, this will be a great signing. Pricey, but he's worth it right now and our need is urgent.

If we can get and keep them all, Huddlestone, Palacios, Jenas, Appiah (what's happening there?) and Zokora would be ideal for the centre-mid slots with Modric to play in the hole and JO'H as an option - though we need him on the left for now.

if de jong is worth £18m, palacios £14m, Diarra £20m, then jol will have to dig deep for huddlestone IMO.

If Palacios signs, i can see Hudd leaving. I like him, but right now Zokora seems to be ahead of him and Palacios is another DM. Hudd is at his best in a 433/ 451 which we do not look like playing anytime soon.

I'd be sad to see Hudd leave but for the right price, it wouldn't be the end of the world.'He isn't pulling up any trees.

Would hate to lose him. He's one of only two first team players we have who play football the traditional Spurs way. Having said that, I used to live in Hamburg at the same time as a certain Kevin Keegan, who was worshipped by the HSV faithful, and I feel Hudd could have the same impact with them. He'd need to watch out for his figure, though. There's a currywurst stand on every corner.
  5. VegasII
    Currywurst? That's a dangerous thing.

Hudd & Wilson P could be decent in das middle.
  6. Stono
Big Martin would have a bucket of ketchup waiting for him. :)

I'd hate to see Huddlestone leave. His performance against Chelsea in the 4-4 was the stuff legends can be made of. He could be the most naturally gifted and elegant footballer on our books. We should be building our team around him - I'd like him to become our Fabregas.

I don't think I'm prone to over-the-top praise, so you can imagine I'd be pretty down if we sold the Hudd. I'd much prefer to let Jenas, Zokora, Dos Santos, and/or Bentley leave instead of him.

The problem at the moment is our precarious position so the thinking is that we can't play with him in a 442 (as BBLG said) ahead of the high-energy Zokora/Jenas/Palacios. I think he's useful back-up at the moment for either the defensive midfielder or Modric, and we should play him with Modric eventually.

I'd swap him for Martin Jol.
  9. bigspurs
It would be a shame, because Huddlestone is one of the few players we have that can pass the ball well. I guess if we have to sell him, then his old master and trainer Jol should give him a good home!
  10. ShelfSide18
I think this is unfortunately very true.

I love the Hudd, I really do, he's got so much talent and is probably one of, if not the most gifted footballer we have - but fitting him in is the trouble.

If he did go I think he could be a superstar in the Italian or Spanish league, it would suit him perfectly. Being with BMJ at Hamburg wouldn't be bad for him either.

Such a shame this is, talking about letting a genuinely good footballer leave.

Is this the same mail that accused us the other day of unsettling other players and who wigan wanted to sell to man city not us?? Great change in stance, really is pathetic going from one thing one day to the opposite the next!!!
  12. bill
If I was Hudd I would be getting out my German phrasebook and donning a Kevin Keegan wig.

Hudd would thrive in the Bundesliga and most certainly be a first choice in the team.

I like Hudd but I would also let him go and get in a more agile midfielder.
  13. tttcowan
No chance if you ask me.... and rightly so. Harry wouldn't let him go for good reason... He's quality... I'd be gutted if we did let him go and kept zokora:eek:mg:
  14. Coyboy
It's a tough situation as Defoe isn't the best on his own. Didn't he play half of last season there for Pompey though? See Bentley linked with Chelsea?
  15. BringBack_leGin
Bentley linked with Chelsea? Where, newsnow doesn't seem to be giving me anything. Link me up?
  16. infamousyiddo
check football365 BBLG. BS story IMO.

no matter how much of a joke our club can be at times, there is always newcastle and citeh to show that things aren't as bad as they seem
  17. northampton_yid
Hudd's going nowhere. Over than Modric, he is our most gifted player, and the one player with a touch of class that can change a game with his vision.
Harry has already said that our squad is too small, therefore its highly unlikey he is gonna sell our best young talent.
  18. markie
If this happens then the club can officially call itself a disgrace. Hudd is IMO the most naturally gifted, intelligent and talented player on our books. No one has the range and vision that he has and we seem to favour Zokora who is a joke of a footballer. We need to play him in a more forward facing role with Palacios behind him, at least this way he could dictate the play and really cause the opposition trouble from the edge of the box.

In terms of the 433 or 451 thing I think it was a wrong move to bring defoe back as we cant use these formations with him at all. both Hudd and Modric look fantastic in these formations yet Harry has a hard on for Defoe.. Oh well.

I hope that Palacios spells the end for zokora in the first team at last.... Fingers crossed ...

I will also swap him with Jol. Bring Jol Back.
