‘It’s the control element in football that’s difficult to handle every day. These days it’s a business. It’s your job. I never saw it that way.

An interesting article, written in a way that is sympathetic to Bentley and his self-regard as a 'maverick' who simply loved to play and did not want to be constrained by what he views as attitudes that are stifling the game and those who play it. In reality of course, Bentley is just describing why he didn't have the right attitude and mental strength to compete at the top level and retired in order to avoid having to do so.

His attitude is short-sighted and selfish and it is exemplified in this description of the decision that he made about his unborn children: 'The family have moved to Marbella, although they came back for a spell so the twins would be born in England.' If he was concerned about his children and bothered to give the subject a moment's thought, he would have realised that if they were born in Marbella they would have dual citizenship and therefore have far more choices in later life.

But he doesn't think. He simply considers himself and acts in the way that means that he can get through life with the least amount of effort. If that means he wastes a talent and countless opportunities, then so be it.

.

Never actually thought about dual citizenship within the EU, assuming the UK remains within the EU, what actual flexibilities and choices would the children have? Honest question as I really don't know....

Not necessarily.

I have friends who emigrated to Australia and their kids remain British citizens because the child is classed as British born overseas.

Pretty sure if me and the Mrs moved to Spain tomorrow, the kid wouldn't be part Spanish.

Also, hilarious that Bentley criticises the 'business' nature of football these days. I bet he wasn't complaining when his agent was negotiating him 65k per week.

Agree Kendall. DOn't have much sympathy for him, he could have had a lot more, but ultimately bottled / didn't have the heart for it.

I'd have given my right arm to be a professional footballer. And this twat gives it up. When he grows up, assuming he does one day he'll look back on this with huge regrets I'm sure.

Which, had you read my post properly, was what I said.

There are always advantages to being a citizen of a particular country rather than being an immigrant to it, EU membership or no EU membership. The relative ease of getting a job is just one simple example of citizenship making life easier.

I just read it again and cannot see where you said that.

You said

This is not necessarily the case.

He's just wanted to earn millions mucking about and not being responsible/professional.

In his head it wasn't much to ask. More than that, he actually resents the game for not delivering that to him.

Amazing.

.....Which is a different point from the one that you made in your first post.....

You said that kids born in Australia to british parents would be british citizens. You also said that children moving to a country with their parents would not become citizens of that country. That is the essence of my point. Which, as you were disagreeing with me, led me to believe that you hadn't read my post properly; hence my remark. Now you are saying something different.

So.....whatever. Have a nice day.

Spurs have done this a few times though in recent memory where they have signed players who may have the technical attributes but lack the correct attitude to be a real professional.

David Bentley's career highlights are his 40-yarder against Arsenal and him dumping all that water over Harry after we beat City.
