Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence is confident that Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino will push him to raise his quality during his loan stint.

“In the Premier League football is faster, the pace is higher but here you have more tactics, you have to use your head”, Spence told Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato.com).

“Serie A is a great opportunity for me.

“I knew Gilardino by reputation, because of his past as a player: with him the start was very good.

“And I am convinced that he will push me to make the leap in quality.”

I know he's talking up his manager and new loan club but I don't see why after earning a transfer to the biggest club of his career as a young player who has started developing a reputation as potentially lazy, tardy or lack work ethic -why does he need a manager to motivate him to improve?

Ange quite obviously doesn't rate him so must have seen something early on. He's not the first either. Sell asap and get someone in who can walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

Josh Onomah is 26 years old and currently without a club. Will the penny finally drop for Spence or will he end up in the same boat?

Getting anything near what we paid for him would be great.
I can't see that tho
Wasn't it £12,5m + add ons (which surely can't have been fulfilled).

If he has a good loan move without injuries I think we can absolutely get back most of that.

If there's one good thing to come out of this transfer, it could be the one that persuades Levy to keep his snout of it and leave player acquisitions to the pros. I think Levy went ahead and bought Spence against the advice of the football people at the club.

Some people need that ONE person for them to see the light. I'm sure we'll move him on, but I am happy to read what he is saying. He is still young enough to forge a good, solid career.
