No, lets. Anyone can come out with stuff like that as if they have the inside track so lets not pretend it was anything other than him lying to the club and to the fans before joining our most bitter rivals. I think you'll find he was hated the moment he did it, not with hindsight. What rot.

How did I do? :D

I reckon that had he gone there and won nothing, he would be regarded as a figure of fun. There would be jokes at his expense, or he would have simply faded from memory, much like Carr after he went off in search of glory with Newcastle. I think the fact that he won titles and cups with Arsenal is the more likely cause of all the hate, and is something that some fans find really hard to accept.

After last night, you're probably right. I enjoyed watching them lose to Barcelona in the CL Final back in '06, especially when Lehmann got sent off, but I think I enjoyed last night even more.
They’re not embarrassed about reaching the CL Final, it’s the best thing they’ve ever done. I was in the pub with a Gooner that night. I didn’t take the piss. Shook his hand and went off and celebrated elsewhere.

Nebs, on top of the hate, he's regarded as a figure of fun now anyway

I guess the cups thing burns you, it might bug a few others, I dunno, but it just isn't a consideration for me. If he'd gone to United he'd have won a lot more and quite possibly not be seen as the greatest footballing judas of all time. Who knows? ?:D

I didn’t hate Sheringham when he went to Utd even though I idolised him as a kid.

I hold no contempt for Carrick, Berbatov, Modric orBale.

I accept that Sol going to Arsenal at the time was a step up.

But who he went to and the manner in which he did it made him the only Spurs player I have ever felt any hatred for.

Saying the manner and the club he went to had nothing to do with it is one of the most ridiculous things I have read on this forum.

Sent from a mate:

Oxford United Board meeting minutes

Chairman: "We have received two applications for the manager's job. The first is from an individual who was described by a former manager as 'unusual' and 'volatile', who once threw a chair at his first-team coach, who threatened to fake an injury in a row with another manager, who sent abusive text messages to his club captain and his chairman's son, who allegedly assaulted two women in a bar and two men in a street, who attacked a team-mate with a golf club, who allegedly once went on strike to force a move, who slapped a pitch invader in the face, and who, most shockingly of all, once played for West Ham."

Board: "Blimey. who's the second from?"

Chairman "Sol Campbell..."

Board Secretary: "All in favour of Craig Bellamy, say 'aye'"

Board: "Aye"

No chance
If he acted honourably the majority would begrudgingly agree but you are ignoring what actually happened. I am talking about the way he conducted himself and lied. Do you really not understand that?

We don’t hate Pat Jennings now do we

Imagine if Gerrard aged 26 was offered a great deal to go to Barca with one year left on his contract.

He said no and spent the next year talking about how much he loved the club even going on the radio stating that he would sign.

3 days later he signed for Utd. Regardless of how many titles he won does anyone think Pool fans would regard him with anything but hatred?

I bet Arsenal fans love it when they hear us singing this song. The fact that some are still so bent out of shape over it must be music to their ears. And let's not try and pretend that it was the manner of his departure that's behind all of this. He's hated because he was proved right. While we stumbled about the place doing nothing, he went to Arsenal and won every domestic trophy going. They were already better than us on the pitch. He made them more so. That's what really hurts and fans should at least be honest about it.

I'm not pretending that it was the manner of his departure as to why I dislike him. It's exactly the manner of his departure as to why I feel toward him the way I do. Going on and winning things at the arse isn't the issue - I don't want them to win anything with or without that arsesol; however, his lying, deceitfulness, treachery and just his general arrogance is why I dislike him.

Be honest about your feelings towards him but don't make sweeping statements for others that you can't substantiate.

What Campbell did (in terms of how he left) and what he achieved at Arsenal really doesn't bother me. I guess I just struggle to understand why people hate him so much. But then again, I don't really get the hatred in football at all. Spurs is the only team that resonates with me on an emotional level. Sometimes England do too, but not for a long while. I'm pretty dispassionate when it comes to all other clubs and players. While they are Spurs they are important. The minute they leave they become sort of irrelevant.

I get that he lied. I just don't get why a bunch of grown men and women allow it to bother them so much. I just don't understand it.

So you're on an emotional level with Spurs but not the players?

Or you are towards the players but once they leave the emotion immediately goes?

Supporting a team isn't particularly logical. I am not from Tottenham but my dad supports them. In my lifetime the players constantly change as do the managers and occasionally the board.

I like to think I am supporting something. So when a player comes up through our youth system, becomes our captain and talks constantly about his love for us only to join our most hated rivals there is going to be emotion there.

If you didn't feel it when he left then good for you but don't assume you know why fans hate him when you don't seem to be a normal football fan.
