Alfie Conn had one regret on his mind as he returned to White Hart Lane for the first time in 37 years on Saturday.

I wish I'd had the chance to see you, Alfie!

Heard many good things about Alfie Conn when I was young.

Not the greatest of players for longevity but nevertheless a talisman, an entertainer and one of my favourites.

The timing was all wrong for Alfie at Spurs.

As I understand it, we were desperate to improve our strike force but transfer fees were escalating out of control and the sort of players that Billy N had previously attracted to Spurs were now out of our reach.

In this context, Billy N took a punt on a promising misfit from Rangers and, once he'd got over some injury issues, AC was a lovely player to watch. However, having one decent young player wasn't enough to paper over all the other problems with our squad and, when Celtic made him an offer, he took a substantial pay cut to move back to Scotland.

Almost 40 years on, he seems like a very decent, grounded guy. Thanks for the memories Alfie.

My dad thought it was Terry Neill who wanted rid of Alfie Conn and Willie Young ?

I think you're half right. AC was never going to prosper in a Terry Neill team, where the emphasis was on defensive solidity and the hope that the likes of John Duncan could grab a winning goal. However, one of Terry Neill's first acts on jumping ship to Arsenal was to poach Willie Young from us, so your father was wrong about that bit.

My memory ain't so good sometimes.. Didn't Ginger Willie try to kick Paul Allen out of Wembley stadium in the 1980 FA cup final?

Didn't discover that Alfie was at the Fulham game until much later. Very disappointed that Spurs didn't get him on at halftime for a few words.

Alfie was an entertainer, if you were fortunate enough to have seen him play you could not forget him. A short Spurs career blighted by injury and a manager (Terry Neil) who wasted his talent.

If there was one player who could take the mick out of opponents it was Alfie Conn!
