AVB wants Liverpool target Ilori as defensive cover after Spurs injuries pile up

Tottenham are showing interest in Liverpool target Tiago Ilori of Sporting Lisbon.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas is keen to recruit a defender with concerns surrounding Younes Kaboul's fitness and Jan Vertonghen's injury.

Ilori, 20, is valued at around £8m and Tottenham have also asked about Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches, 23, who is wanted by AC Milan and Roma.

Most likely the thought process behind this link:

- Jan Vertonghen goes down with an injury that may sideline him for the start of the season.

- Daily Mail looks at the roster and sees that leaves 3 CBs on the roster with one with injury question marks in Kaboul.

- Daily Mail then thinks 'Who could Tottenham be looking at?'

- Person knows they have no sources so they think to themselves 'Well, I'm not sure, I'll just go with whoever Liverpool is looking at...'

- Person sees Ilori mentioned...

Voila : Tottenham Interested in Tiago Ilori.

To be fair, he's a good player.

Have you seen much of him Snarf? What's his play like? How does he compare to Jan/Caulker/Chiriches?

I remember watching him during the recent U20 World Cup in which he played for Portugal. Looked really solid to me and was a classy defender in that he didn't result to last ditch tackles but was more confident in his ability to dispossess his man and play the ball out of the back as opposed to hoofing it forward. I wasn't specifically watching him but he didn't do anything that I remember saying to myself it was poor defending. Generally that's a good sign.

He's pretty inexperienced and I can't recall watching him for Sporting Lisbon this past year. I looked up his match statistics and he did play in 11 matches for Sporting but spent a majority of his season with the Sporting Lisbon B squad.

I just hope that if we are really looking at him we are also trying to get Bruma who I think could be just as big a talent as Bale in the years to come.

Holy crap, just looked up Bruma and came up with this: "However, events have now taken an ugly turn with his agent quoted as telling the Portuguese press that members of a Sporting supporters' group tried to kidnap the player."

I would too if I were them. He's so freaking good. I would honestly not be upset to see us splash 20m Euros on him. In my opinion, after watching him, he puts Bernard to shame.

Journo's reckon Bruma will end up with Mourinho this Summer or next.

Ilori overrated imo. He is one of the fastest sprinters around and is a little above average CB currently, but is young and has a lot of potential which means he could imrpve greatly under the right tutelage, plus with him being British descent, he is an attractive prospect to British based Managers who like to utilise a high defensive line.

Liverpool pulled out of negotiations as Sporting wanted £10m for him and we rated him at £5-6m currently (the asking price is way above value tbf).

You serious? Bruma's a great prospect but I think you're overrating him by quite some distance there mate.

Maybe stating that he puts Bernard to shame was a bit heavy-handed, but I am fully convinced he's the better prospect.

I don't know if I've seen a youngster (Bruma's only 18) with the type of touch, pace and general well-rounded game that Bruma has. He might honestly be faster than Walcott but the difference is he's actually a footballer with a clue on how to attack defenses as opposed to Walcott who relies on running fast in a straight line.

His first touch is fantastic, his dribbling is on point and at only 18, he's already got the skills and body to be a contributor in the EPL. He's such an electrifying talent that I really do believe he could be the next winger superstar to really become a worldwide star.

I thought we needed to bring in another CB even before Verts got injured. Now that he has the need is even more prevalent. Kaboul has dodgy knees and there's a very large chance he'll miss atleast some game time again this season. Dawson seems to teeter-totter between being a class act and being complete shit by the week, so we'll never know which version will show up on the pitch, not to mention the fact he has a history with injuries. And lastly we have Caulker whom isn't good enough (debatable) in his current form to be a starter in a team challenging for the top. Can't expect much more from a young player who is currently 4th choice CB. He will do fine in a pinch but he isn't good enough to start for long lengths of time.

Another player would certainly help our rotation and give us insurance if/when the inevitable injury crisis happens (as it always seems to with our club). Whether or not Ilori is the right man is unknown to me as i don't know anything about him but I like that we're being linked with a CB and i definitely think we need to bring another one in.

His end product isnt there yet IMO, he's quick and a decent dribbler I agree. 20M euro's though? he only played 13 times for Sporting last season!

I think when you look at guys like Jese and Deulofeu it's a similar situation. Both are highly rated youngsters that are relatively inexperienced but you still know they hold these lofty values because they are talented enough to warrant it. Granted, those two have their parent clubs in their favor when it comes to maximizing their valuation but the same can even be said for a guy like Alen Halilovic. Players with huge potential are so sought after these days they hold big valuations despite being relatively inexperienced. In the end, just as it is with Bernard, you have to trust your scouting as any of these guys can flop. Obviously Bruma has risks involved but I really do believe he's got everything it will take to become an impact starter for a club like ours.

Oh c'mon Snarf you don't believe that. Electric is how I'd describe Bruma, he's like a slightly more refined wilfred zaha. I don't think he is as good a footballer as Bernard at this stage. Bernard is so good at using the ball but he doesn't have the pace and power that so many seem to love.

Sporting Lisbon slap £6m price tag on Tottenham and Liverpool target Tiago Ilori

TOTTENHAM and Liverpool are set to battle it out for Tiago Ilori after Sporting Lisbon confirmed they will listen to offers of £6m for the player.

Liverpool made a £3m bid for the talented defender earlier in the offseason only for the Anfield club to turn their attentions elsewhere after Sporting reportedly refused to negotiate.

But according to A Bola, the Portugese club are now ready to cash in on Ilori after failing to get the 20-year-old to agree to a new contract.

Brendan Rodgers is thought to be an admirer of Ilori after being impressed by the player's performances in the centre of Sporting's defence after breaking into the side in February.

Rodgers has already signed Kolo Toure from Manchester City this summer as a replacement for the retired Jamie Carragher but is thought to be interested in adding Ilori with the future's of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger still uncertain.

Ilori built on his burgeoning reputation with some assured displays for Portugal at the Under-20 World Cup in Turkey earlier this summer, and that alerted Andre Villas-Boas that he could be a good fit at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham are also looking to add a new defender after the sale of Steven Caulker to Cardiff, missing out on Romanian defender Vlad Chiriches and a pre-season injury to Jan Vertonghen.

Despite representing Portugal at youth level, Ilori was born in London to an English father and it is not thought that he would have any difficulty in adjusting to life in England with either Spurs or Liverpool.
