I couldn't name another current player more deserving of a new contract.

Great news.

What a top lad Mason is and you know the comments are genuine for a change. I hope him Kane and Bentaleb form the spine of our team for the next 7 or 8 years

Would never have given him (or any player) that length of contract. Nothing personal against Mason, but how often have we seen players on lengthy contracts turn into squad players after a season or two. Three year maximum in my opinion for any player.

That said a contract for any player wanting out is worth bugger all, so perhaps Levy is looking at it from the angle of a sale rather than a long term future. Again i am talking in general here and not against a player deserving a longer contract such as Mason.

The leverage players have when there's 18 months left on their contract often ties a club's hands. In that sense, you can lop a year-and-a-half off many contracts of a player doing well and have to renegotiate. So if you give 3 yr deals as policy, you'll end up doing lots of contracting half way through it.

The issue about a contract being worth bugger all can also be addressed by a club just saying no to suitors and requests to leave. Players aren't so self-destructive as to write their careers off for one to two years if you hold them to their contract. There's way too much acquiescence by clubs, IMO.

For Mason specifically, it appears he has the character to be worthy of a long-term deal. He doesn't ask to be seen as a 'young lad' or that his breakthrough was somewhat fortuitous. He had that post-match interview one time where he said he wasn't some kid, but a 23 yr old man. And he didn't just emerge, he's been working at this for years. So good luck to him on his new deal and hopefully his career arc continues to rise.
