Well, that took a few minutes off my life expectancy. I had set up a recording session for 8pm, but fuck that, I kept the guitarist waiting... now we've finished the session and he's gone and I can take a breath.

As I wrote at half time, the responsibility for that mess, albeit an ultimately successful mess, has to rest with our talented manager. Whilst his team were being embarrassingly useless for 90 minutes last week, Andrea Stramaccioni noticed something, which is that there is about a hectare of space in between our high-line defence and the goalkeeper when we play Friedel. His team were 3-0 down and the only way they were going to get back into the tie was to attack that space with counters and balls over the top.

Friedel is still a good 'keeper, but if he plays, we cannot play the defensive line 3m short of the halfway line when we're protecting a lead and we're away from home against a major club. It's not as if Brad made any dreadful mistakes. He just did what he has been doing for the past 20 years, did it pretty well, made some excellent saves and , um, let in 4 goals, because our defensive line did ineffectively what it has been doing effectively since the home match against Swansea. It was obvious that the approach wasn't working from about the 15th minute. There was just too much acreage between the goalkeeper and the defence. Did AVB change anything? Did he, fuck.

It wasn't the fault of the bloody strikers, dyspeptic as they both seemed. It wasn't the fault of Scott Parker, who was totally out of touch in the first half, but sorted himself out in the second half. The third goal was Kyle Walker's responsibility for giving away an avoidable free kick, but the rest of the goals were just down to inadvisable tactics. AVB is a great manager in many ways, but he's very young and sometimes he just gets it wrong. Tonight he got it totally wrong and then didn't take an opportunity to change it until Lennon came on.

Never mind: we got through in the end, thanks to Dembélé's persistence and - finally - a case of Adebayor being in the right place at the right time and not having enough time to figure out a novel way to miss the goal. Even then, we nearly managed to figure out a way to fuck it up.

But we didn't. We're getting better at that.

You set up a recording session? I almost ordered myself ECT so that the voltage through my brain would frazzle any memory of that match. The only problem is that watching Kyle Walker's mistakes is becoming like Groundhog Day.

I've stayed out of SC so far tonight. I posted after the 3-0 first leg that the match was one of the best
all round performances I had seen in almost 50 years of watching.

Tonight it was pretty obvious that it was the reverse, I dunno, so many unforced errors, passes and possession given away needlessly. Defoe and Adebayor looked like they were two blokes pulled in off the street and asked to join in to make up the numbers.

It was the old script we were running with, giving away the ball cheaply, under little pressure and the Keystone Cops mentality was there. There must have been plenty of houses up and down the country with folk around their tellies having a chortle at the hapless exploits, grown men calling their wives in to watch MY TEAM self destruct while they ate their hot-pots and mushy peas.

It was getting worse by the minute and as my heart rate rose alarmingly my worst fears were happening as if the haunted days of old were once again returning. The numerous fans gloating at our rivals from South London and their CL exit seemed to have invoked some wrath of the football gods and it was time for payback, a scenario that I had seen in every decade at WHL, Wembley and on distant pitches throughout the land and Europe too.

The have been so many heartaches, losing to double winning Arsenal in 1971, Chelsea 1972 LC s/f, the Derby and Forest replay matches when the hard work was done and the replay was supposed to be a cakewalk. The stuff of nightmares indeed, the Blackburn CC final, I honestly thought tonight was going to go down as one of those calamitous nights and I was visibly shaking with - I don't know - terror ? or Fear ? Or the dread of them effing Gooners I know giving me stick once again. My Mrs was kicking off - my 18 tablets a day habit (heart disease and diabetes etc) I endure to keep me alive was working overtime and my arms were weary and she was going to pull the plug and stop me watching.

And then somefuckingIdon'tknowhowbastardAdeybayor managed to reach out a peg with his arse about two inches off the ground and slotted the ball into the net.

Hell Yes ! I swore and danced with deep joy and cussed and cussed. They rest they say is magic. But manic.

Not sure if posted yet: http://www.croatiantimes.com/news/S...Sent_White_Stick_Ahead_of_Europa_League_Game_

The referee of Thursday's Europa League match between Tottenham and Inter Milan has been sent a blind man's white stick by frustrated fans of Croatian side Hajduk Split 'to help him referee the game fairly'.
Fans in his home country were so outraged by referee Ivan Bebek's decisions in a recent game between Split and Dinamo Zagreb they sent a package to him to the Croatian Football Federation which included the white stick, a ref jersey and a rival team scarf. The fan club issued a statement saying: "We apologize to blind people, we do not want to offend anyone, but just want to help the referee Ivan Bebek ahead of the game".

Heh. It was the only day for weeks around that we could write and record guitar tracks for a new song that I want to get finished soon and I know he can't make it until 8.00, so I reckoned, cool, the football kicks off at 6.00...

Took my mind off the game, though ;).

Just an observation or two:

Dembele is no Modric and Parker no Beast. Secondly why did we buy Holt?

Anyone notice Walker jogging back from their corner flag leaving there player free to score Inter's first goal? I think he is suffering from Tattoo withdraw symptoms.....

If AVB has balls Walker and Defoe should be dropped and let Naughton play right back instead. Joanna Lumley can fill in for Defoe. She's a bit of a dog but at least she looks the part.

I got a "WTF" for suggesting AVB drops some players and BF is one I had in mind, purely because we operate as a good defensive unit with Lloris in goal. We have moved on and we need a stable back five for the rest of the season.

Whoever we had in goal tonight would not have saved the first goal. Look half way down the pitch and you would have seen Walker jogging back. After Sunday and tonight he cannot command a starting position. Seven goals conceded in two games says it all. Walker stinks the place out and Defoe should be fucking ashamed to pick up his 80k this week.

Walker was just about in his own half when the cross came over for their first goal David. He is becoming more and more of a liability. Not for the first time he got his priorities all wrong. I am worried that AVB doesn't see this?

Starting 442 was suicidal from AVB and Walker, Defoe and Gallas will give me nightmares for weeks to come after those performances.

AVB learnt from his Wigan stinker. I pray he learns from the errors of last night.

Love AVB as our manager but I hope he sits down after that and admits to himself he got it wrong.
1. played 2 strikers leaving Parker and Livermore in CM.
2. playing Gylfi and Mousse wide right and left who were ineffective and when they received the ball all they did was pass it back into the middle to a already overrun Parker and Livermore. ( why did we loan out Townsend ? )
3. playing Livermore.
4. playing Friedel and Gallas in a high line defence.
I could go on but hey we've overcome Lyon and Inter we're in the draw this morning. COYS

Why only look at Walker? yes he should have got back quicker, but with no Wingers both FBs had to push on, and if you look back at the goal, Demeblle was the one that was filling in for Walker and left the player to score, so to me Dembelle is as much if not more at fault.

We needed Gallas's experience to get us through that last night. Unfortunately we needed it in London and he was in Milan!

Walker was just about in his own half when the cross came over for their first goal David. He is becoming more and more of a liability. Not for the first time he got his priorities all wrong. I am worried that AVB doesn't see this?

It was plain that both fullbacks were under instructions to bomb on, overlap and try to get the away goal. They started doing it almost from the kick off and kept doing it until we had conceded 2 goals. We were missing both quick wingers and they were our only source of width and pace.

Up until the Liverpool match, Walker had provided a succession of solid performances during our unbeaten run. It was hard to drop him on the basis of 12 matches without a loss.

Losing to Liverpool was down to individual errors. Shipping 4 goals last night was not, it was down to the manager's ill-chosen tactics and lack of adjustment.
