Is Pochettino lining Barkley up to be the long-term Dembele replacement?

Hi guys,

How are you all doing?

Reports have suggested you're back in for Barkley and that Pochettino sees him playing in a deeper role. With that in mind we've taken a look at whether the Everton man has the ability to takeover from the slaloming Belgian.

"One of the many reasons Dembélé is so invaluable to the Spurs starting XI is because of just how press resistant he is. Teams can swarm the midfield but the Belgian, as composed as ever, manages to wriggle into space and retain possession for his team.

Barkley has a similar quality."

Barkley could replace Dembele

Hope you enjoy.

Cheers,

Yep ideal replacement and just as injury prone.

Ideal, apart from being shit for Everton when played as a cm ?

I really hope he’s not being lined up to be Dembele’s replacement, we’d have been better off doing what Liverpool did and put a deposit down on Naby Keita, buy a decent but very promising proper cm or give Onomah or Winks chances.

I don’t mind Barkley coming in to give Alli some competition if we can’t get anyone better, but he’s not a cm.

Bam! Barkley can join if he so wishes, I have no desire to stop him. But as far as CM reinforcements go, we should look at that with fresh eyes in January and not feel obligated to sign Barkley only for CM roles.

I think Barkley would be deployed high up as competition/rotation with Dele and Eriksen as Winks looks like the long term replacement for Dembele.

Onomah too. I thought he looked fantastic in the U19 World Cup playing his natural position. I’d rather we give both Winks/Onomah chances to replace Dembele down the road than look outside the club for a replacement. I think both have the potential to be stars.

We're quite flexible now in formation, so an improved Barkley could be valuable for a couple of different positions. Certainly, Sissoko is seeing more game time as an inside-right midfielder, and Barkley could be an improvement on Sissoko*. When you see a Spurs eleven now, there aren't too many holes in the side unless the manager is trying to be clever by leaving out a left-sided player completely. Usually, if there's one potentially weaker link, it's that role that Sissoko may make his own, or Winks, or that Dembele may recover to own again.

*This isn't meant as an attack or pile on for Sissoko - he's done a bit better recently, but he's still pretty limited technically in a way Barkley is not.

Agree with both. I don’t think we will be seeing him playing deep for Spurs. If he comes, it’s to provide competition and rotation for Dele and Eriksen.

Winks is like a young Scott Parker for me, so with a slightly different skill set to Dembélé, think he will end up in his spot though. Hopefully Onomah does well at Villa and also comes back and wins a place.

I don’t think Winks is as good defensively as Parker was, but I do think he’s better on the ball.

Unfortunately, Onomah has now been benched by Bruce, despite Villa fans describing him as their best player in his early games. Unfortunately results didn’t go their way and Bruce has reverted to a more safety first approach which has seen them start picking up results. I fear Onomah will be a hostage to tactical pragmatism now, which doesn’t bode well.

That’s a shame, I guess Bruce has to do what he has to do, let’s hope Onomah pushes his way in.
