It's because they're cheapskates. It sometimes happens on Setanta when they're broadcasting European games.

The issue is that British TV cameras record in 16:9 with the cameraman (person) framing for 14:9 - which is what most domestic TV sets play. When feeds are received in 4:3, which is still the standard in some territories, these pictures have to go through a process know as ARC-ing to convert them to full 16:9 (14:9 safe). Since the Spurs coverage today should be by British crews shooting 16:9 (14:9 safe), there's no excuse - other than pennypinching - for ITV4 not showing it in proper widescreen.

We shall see later today...

For the true technophiles, ARC-ing is industry jargon for Aspect Ratio Conversion... or loosely Aspect Ratio Converting...

Five do it too.

Why don't they copy Sky and their La Liga coverage? La Liga isn't in 16:9 so the program isn't - simple, its not hard to do.

Feckin' hell mate - are you a Sky cameraman ?

Top work anyway

When I was at uni (would have been about '96) I actually used to know a guy who was a Premier League cameraman. As you can imagine my first words back then were something like lucky and bastard. Hardly, he said, and explained that he hated sport and wanted to do movies

Some people are never happy :)

No, I'm a documentary director. One of the ironic things about telly is that many people end up in parts of the industry they don't like - eg your cameraman mate who I'm sure regularly ends up getting wet and cold in Newcastle when he'd rather be shooting the next Bond movie at (um, sunny?) Pinewood.

In my case, I've spent most of my career making reasonably serious documentaries for the likes of the BBC & Ch4, and now they want me to make exploitative celebrity-led reality pap because they think it's all viewers want to watch...

I'm a TV'er too... but FINALLY doing something I love after years of woeful reality TV.

I work for a company who provide Premier League, Serie A, Bundesligue and some international football for Africa. For the first time in my life, I love my job...

But yeah, back to the point... My poor Mum flicks all night long when the aspect ratio isn't right... She thinks because I work in TV I can fix it!

Sounds like a splendid gig! Congrats!

And on topic - I see ITV4 managed to show Spurs in the correct aspect ratio tonight, presumably because it was a British crew...

They may have got the aspect ratio right but their bitrate is horrendous. Looked awful on a large TV.

ITV's picture quality has always been rubbish.
