Because that then strips money from the overall budget that can be allocated elsewhere. Not to mention the wages that come with that profile of player. It's all bigger picture stuff and I think that's what most are either failing or just plainly don't want to see.
Why are you having us sign Martial then when we have two players similar already? We only have two areas to fill and enough money to allocate to those positions.
We are not spending 69-80 mil on a player. It just isn't going to happen.
I realise that, nor to I don't we should. It was just the random number that was discussed in the first place.

I don't think it'll take that much anyway to get the type of player I'd like us to get anyway. I also think it's a stupid argument to justify signing Grealish by saying we aren't going to spend X amount on a back-up for Eriksen when that player would be a lot more than that.

I don't care about how much he costs. He's Poch's number one choice and I've seen a lot of him & he will fit in very well in our Team & will be worth a hell of a lot more if and when we decided to sell him.
Just catching up on this thread and been watching some videos, he looks decent - - played against the Championship league winners and was clearly targeted by them and still had a decent game. Didnt realise he had that pace and close control. I think poch would do an amazing job on him and he def seems like he would fit from the limited video of his games.

And playing in a better side will elevate his game - clear to see he's very creative and brave on the ball.

Sometimes he holds onto the ball for too long, but that's probably because he's quite literally carrying that Villa side on his own when it comes to making something happen...

I only used those numbers because that seems to be the figures being touted for Pulisic and Bailey - which based on whats been said / reported on are the alternatives.

There are some aspects of the game that a player really can't improve a lot on. Like shear pace, incredible physique, or vision. Grealish is rather pacey - at least in comparison to our current players in the middle and he has very good vision, that is what really stood out in the few matches I've seen with Villa.

I can definitely see why Pochettino likes him. He is quite raw but he has all the right tools to become a good, maybe even great PL player. All other apsects like positional awarenesses, defensive duties etc he will learn from working with Pochettino and the team. Pochettino might even see him as a future CM player.

The more I think about this deal the more it makes sense.

Tottenham leading race to sign Aston Villa's £40m-rated star Jack Grealish
  • Mauricio Pochettino believes Jack Grealish's style fits the profile for his squad
  • The 22-year-old has attracted interest from Leicester, Everton and West Ham
  • Aston Villa are in a perilous financial position after missing out on promotion
  • But the Championship side value Grealish at £40m and are remaining defiant

Tottenham are leading the chase for Aston Villa's £40million-rated midfielder Jack Grealish.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino believes Grealish's skill and high energy fits the profile he wants for his squad and the 22-year-old is keen on developing alongside the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Grealish has plenty of interest from other Premier League clubs including Leicester City, Everton and West Ham but his preference is understood to be Tottenham.

The main obstacle though is Villa's seemingly high valuation of £40m.

The Championship side's perilous financial position has left them vulnerable to offers for their best players but they remain defiant that they will not sell for under their market value.

Rivals believe that is unrealistic and are anticipating that prices will come down as pressure mounts on their finances.

Im in the 'For' signing Grealish camp and think he would be an astute signing.

The kid has real talent , yes he's raw but we have a manager who has a great record in developing young English players.

So why are you spending money on someone we don't need?

You asked why do you have me spending money on Martial when we already have two players similar. I said we don’t.

Therefore that would lead to us needing because we don’t have players like that.

Grealish and Winks in midfield just doesn't scream physical to me.

Numbers aren't everything. If he's replacing Sissokko as far as time on the pitch is concerned his numbers are phenomenal. Just imagine selling Sissokko for a similar fee to Grealish, does that sound more acceptable now, because I can see Levy getting 20-25 mil for him.

I tend to agree, Grealish is an upgrade on Sissoko. It also better for the squad homegrown quota for CL and League...but also if Poch thinks he's worth the punt...I trust him. He's a great coach and maybe with a bit more coaching he seems him as a top player. Just saying. It's worth just the numbers for Sissoko going.

Sorry, thought you meant we didn't have the money. I disagree with you there, but this has gone really far from the original point it's probably best we drop the convo. (y)

Do really believe Levy is about to spend 40 million on Grealish ? That may be the very unlikely headline figure for the press but it will be made up of a significant amount of unachieveable add ons.

If Poch would play him in he middle with a traditional DM (assuming JG had the skill set/tackling ability), that might be kind of interesting. Sort of a yapping terrier type like Wilshere...I hate to admit it but Wilshere always seems like the best player that shit club down the road has when healthy.

Doubt we’d ever see them as a midfield two

One of our biggest problems has been fielding a stodgy midfield against teams that offer very little threat who we find very difficult to break down. There may well be instances where Grealish/Winks would be a good combination. The other thing about Grealish is that he's versatile and can play AM or deeper.
