You are probably right sadly regarding Lamela.

I have always thought he was an important member of the squad because of his creativity. However Alli has developed a lot over the past year in this regard and Grealish will give us more in that department. We've could have a couple of alternatives to Eriksen now.

I'd be more accepting of Lamela leaving if Grealish arrived, but I do still think his work rate and aggressive nature could be sorely missed. We will need to think carefully about it as you need those characters around the squad.

Lamela is 3x the player.

We'd be going backwards if we sold Lamela and replaced him with Grealish.

we wouldn't be going backwards as we wouldn't be playing Grealish as a wide forward. the original post was if we signed Martial and Grealish. Martial would be the one replacing Lamela (even if they play opposite sides).

The issue is the way we line up currently doesn't even have 2 wide players in the setup. Eriksen occupies one of those spots.

Son - Alli - Eriksen
Martial - Grealish - Lucas?
Blank - Blank - Lamela?

If we get Martial we'd also likely eventually lose Son too (I'm well aware he has looming army duty but Asian games should be a good opportunity to erase that) as he wasn't happy in his first year when he didn't get much playing time.

totally agree with Son, if we sign Martial this window, I very much doubt we will have Son on the books for the start of 2019/20 season, either that or we will have a grumpy Martial because he can't get in the squad regular.

there has been rumour that we will be changing our formation, but not sure what way. the thing is if we are going to try and win anything we need a stronger 25

Do these two moves really move the needle for you that much? I don't think any of these deals that have been discussed make us that much better next year really. Sure Martial can be a fantastic player but he doesn't bring much to the team that Son doesn't.

I like Grealish, and believe it means there will be times when we won't miss Eriksen when he isn't well/fit. if signing Grealish means Eriksen doesn't have to play a possible 60 matches then it will definitely be a good signing, providing it pays off and Jack doesn't get drawn into the sparkly lights of London

Excuse me. Selling Lamela for Grealish is a definite no no who in their right mind thought that through , Grealish is a Sissoko upgrade and a squad player with extremely high potential who could cover Lamela Eriksen and Alli also play with

@Hercules mentioned we are buying players for a change in formation so I hope that means a move away from the ridged 4-2-3-1 we play

So do I just have too much faith in Lamela? Am I missing what games Grealish plays, I just genuinely don't understand it. Every team minus maybe City would love to have a backup attacking line up of Son - Lamela - Lucas. I know Son is a likely starter as well but he still rotates enough that he plays most cup games. I mean if we're talking about cup games Lamela kills those teams, Swansea, Newport, Rochdale Lamela dominated those games. If Grealish takes over the Sissoko role where he fills in when people are injured and can sit in a 3 man midfield I guess that makes sense with he and Winks on either side of Dier or Wanyama. Sissoko once Lamela and Lucas were here played in a more defensive role though.

don't think Grealish would be replacing Lamela, but with Lamela what I love is the fire in his belly and the effort he puts in with his closing down, the frustrating thing with Lamela is when he 1st come over I saw him in the early EL matches, but always seems to struggle to produce the goods on the PL stage. if we could find the work and fire of a Lamela and also a more consistent and better finisher I would be happier, but deep down he has only had 1 really good season with us 2015/16

The Mirror has Leicester in pole position for JG, although might be all smoke & mirrors.

I'm sure that would be Villa's preference if they were willing to offer a lot more money, doesn't mean it would be Jack's. Unfortunate for them that they don't have the luxury of time on their side in order to get what they want.

I don't disagree that he has been disappointing at times but he showed more consistency when he came back from his injury IMO. I think he really turned a corner that season, got injured early on in 16/17 but looked pretty strong when he came back in late November and then on.

The formation change is the only way this makes sense. As it stands now unless Lucas is jumping into the starting line up Lamela is our backup 10. Grealish is being brought in to be a creative player and from what everyone he's says is a 10.

Everybody isn't saying Grealish is a 10. The squad situation is more fluid than that.

He can play 10, but for Villa last season he played as one of two CMs, alongside Hourihane, with Jedinak or Whelan behind him as a holding DM.

I believe he's being targeted as the Eriksen understudy but also as a potential Dembele replacement if we switch to a 4-1-2-2-1, as I argued in my post here (which was winnered by @Hercules )

I mean makes sense, certainly 'meh' as Hercules originally said if that is our CM signing for the summer. I really have no idea how this window plays out at this point.

How many times have you watched Grealish play a full match?

Not once as I've stated several times. The literal guy who gave us the info said it was a 'meh' signing. CM is without a doubt our biggest issue going into next season, we should be going for proven talent there. That is my entire point in this whole thread.

Sorry i disagree. Herc said it "could be seen" as a meh signing. Look beyond the obvious.

Your entire point about a player you have never seen kick a football.

Only now it's about 20 pages later.

Fucking hell.
