Speaking of shutting things down, I’m shutting down any spats which may be growing in this thread. Stick to the player link people or soon you’ll be in threads talking about the confusion over loss of access.
All this over Grealish. Imagine it at the end of the window if something goes wrong.

Well Grealish was supposed to be Poch’s choice wasn’t he? Can’t see him being happy with Levy dilly dallying trying to knock the price down and getting pipped at the post

You don't think then this story has been put out by Villa in an attempt to hurry Levy up with a bigger offer ?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion about Levy's negotiating style, however not all opinions are created equal.

A take it or leave it offer is the correct approach in this situation, if a company is in a crippled state and you want to buy up their IP your bid should be so low that they will feel like they've been royally fucked but they know they have to accept it.

That's what we're doing here, we've left an offer on the table and we won't blink. It's also not like we're sitting around and doing nothing else whilst waiting for Villa to blink, business doesn't work like that.

Levy has a reputation for not blinking. Unfortunately it will mean we miss out sometimes but then so does every club.

Who knows.

Sometimes I think we need to understand that other bidders can come in at any point and the longer we leave a deal incomplete the more chance there is of other clubs becoming involved.

It's as if we think us and the selling club are the only two clubs in existence sometimes.

It's all going to depend on what JG wants. There could be parallels to the Foyth deal. We pretty much messed up that one until Foyth himself refused to go to PSG but whether Grealish will do the same is another matter.

The foyth deal where the itks said it was done yet a lot of fans got in a panic thinking we'd lost out? Probably exactly like that.

This is the normal lifecycle for an "underwhelming" transfer:

Denial
ITK/Media links:
"Don't want him, he's shit, just a cheap alternative. Poch doesn't want him"

Acceptance
ITK report it's definitely near and Poch wants him:
"Would be a decent buy for £15m"
"Typical Poch player"

Levyism
DL drags out the transfer....another club gets linked

Lustful Desire
"We should just pay what they want"
"If we don't sign him it'll be a huge mistake"
"He's not backing the manager"

It's true that not all opinions are created equal.

You neglected to mention that Grealish's agent is also Bale's, with whom we have good relations. So Levy could indeed sit tight when we were the biggest club in for Grealish and were confident he & his agent wanted Spurs, and seek to take advantage of Villa's taxman problems.

This is why the likes of Leicester switched their attention from Grealish to Maddison.

But if Liverpool have genuinely entered the hunt for Grealish because of Fekir's medical problems, then we now have real competition because I suspect both player & agent would also consider a move to Liverpool.

So the situation has changed.

It may be that Liverpool's alleged interest has been leaked by Villa to make Levy think there will now be an auction.

We don't know. That judgement call now belongs to Levy, who I'm sure will be seeking as much information as possible about Liverpool's "interest".

Ultimately, I suspect we will still get Grealish because of our relationship with his agent. But the price, or the amount we have to pay up front because of Villa's immediate tax bill, may just have increased signficantly.

We basically did lose out only for Foyth to refuse to go to PSG. Multiple articles stated this was the case.

Summed up really nicely.

Did we ever get clarity on that situation with PSG though? In Hercules transfer window post mortem he said "Daniel, you naughty boy what you did with PSG. Can we say they were never serious?"

It makes zero sense for us to have made up PSG interest. What good would that have done for us? Surely if it was made up then that would have been from the Estudiantes end?
I mean I certainly don't understand it, just made me think of it again.

We didn't lose out on foyth though. We got him for the original price we bid. So maybe before everyone starts panicking they should wait and see what happens.

I was under the impression that Levy doesn't blink.

He throws offers in left right and centre and then leaves them dangling and waits for a bite.

No surprise Liverpool linked, villa want more money and are desperate, I would be very surprised if it's true. I think he will be gone by the end of the month, most probably to Spurs.

So true - perhaps it is Levy's way of building up support amongst fans for all of our signings! Haha

With the media reports coming out, this is showing early signs of playing out like a Ross Barkley type deal, where we wait for the valuation to drop and we wait too long and we end up missing out on the player
