Barkley had a better season at Everton in the prem 2 years ago than what Grealish did at Villa in the championship. They're about the same age. Would definitely take Barkley in this one
Yeah, but he retired which was a shame. Wonder what he's up to now?!

Barkley is two years older than Grealish...will be 25 this fall coming off a major injury and somewhat plateaued in development. Grealish is significantly younger in footballing terms and his development appears to be on an upward trajectory. I don’t know who will be the better player but there are goods reasons to believe it will be JG.

Clearly lots of potential with this lad. Just not clear on what is his best position? And how he would fit in with our style of play... In particular if we switch to playing more 3 at the back and 433, in addition to the usual 4231, then what is his best position in those formations? I can see him in a midfield 3 playing on the left of a DM, while Eriksen plays on the right. But outside of that, I'm unclear but excited to see what he could bring to the table should we buy him.

Judging by the below quote, I think it’s safe to say that Bruce is talking about Levy waiting for deadline day (like he loves to do) to get the cheapest price possible, knowing villa have to sell. So don’t think we’ll be signing Grealish until the last day:

"Inevitably that is going to be player sales. There are going to be people that I do not want to sell - and the obvious one is Jack [Grealish] - but people will know that we have got financial problems and they'll sit and wait, and wait, till Deadline Day possibly. I hope that doesn't happen but we've got to baton down the hatches and wait for it."

Damn, Steve Bruce really doesn't understand the idea of holding your cards close to your chest. Basically just threw his pistol over to Wyatt Earp before they duel.

Here's what you're supposed to say: "We haven't received any offers and Jack is an extremely important player for us. We're in great financial shape and don't need to sell, but if an extraordinary, record-breaking offer came in that was suitable to both Jack and Aston Villa Football Club, we'd of course have to consider it."

Sure....that’s what you’d say if the deal wasn’t already agreed.

Or he was an idiot. Everyone knows Villa's financial 'challenges'. so if we want JG, I suspect that we won't be the only ones waiting to (somewhat) lowball them at the 11th hour. It's good business from the buying club.

While that would be more professional, their financials seem to be an open secret. Their chairman just flat-out said they must sell players to meet FFP, they have no other options, and any interested clubs can do the math and realize which players can or cannot raise the amount they need.

If we end up loaning them a couple of players, which we may as part of the deal, then I’d suspect Bruce would also want them in sooner rather than later. As their first match is at the beginning of August then things simply have to move soon. I can’t believe Spurs will want him playing the first Championship match of the season either.

No way he plays any matches. They must sell him to balance the books. An injury would put them in serious trouble.

As you say mate Grealish would probably play in a midfield three either side of a DM or left or centre in an attacking three behind Kane.

They couldn't afford to buy a player on a free ... I don't think Bruce was ever going to convince anyone that finances were great. Bruce is just managing the supporters expectations for when Grealish was sold.

He posted on his IG story that he is at training today. I very much doubt any announcement regarding him would be made today, with him in Portugal, still with his current club.
