In a double pivot maybe, but not as the number 6 in a 433- I’d worry about our defensive vulnerability
He wouldn’t be a number 6 though I don’t think. It would always be as an 8 (what Dembele technically does) or a 10 (if he played further up in a 4231, or in the middle of a 433).

For either system (very theoretical, not necessarily what I want to see, just playing around with the current squad + Grealish):
  1. Lloris/ Vorm
  2. Trippier/ Aurier
  3. Rose/ Davies
  4. Dier/ Wanyama
  5. Vertonghen/ Foyth
  6. Sanchez/ Sanchez
  7. Dele/ Son
  8. Grealish/ Winks
  9. Kane/ Llorente
  10. Eriksen/ Lamela
  11. Lucas/ Sissoko

Thanks for this- interesting points
I think he’s backup in a 433- Alli and Eriksen would be your 8 and 10. I can’t see either of them out wide in a 433 but then our movement is pretty fluid. Having Son, Lucas and actively pursuing another WF makes me think Poch is looking for traditional pace/directness out wide.

I hope you’re right as I love the idea of a Dele/ Erikson pivot in a 433, with Son/ Lucas/ Lamela / New player making up the wide positions. Beauty is, in that instance Grealish could slot into any of 7/8/10/11 quite easily.

I actually think he will be competing with Son, Dele, Eriksen, Lucas and Lamela for the 3 spots.

I see Grealish playing centrally in the middle third of the pitch and someone who transitions defence to attack without scoring or assisting as much as our AMs (Eriksen, Dele, Moura etc.). I see him competing with Sissoko, Winks, Dembele to partner Dier or Wanyama in CM.

You do realise that each percentage being shaved off is worth the average price of a house in the UK roughly, maybe more?
Obviously. But those figures mean something slightly different to an elite level football club with a billionaire owner. I’m tired of our fans making excuses for it as well. I’m not saying we should go crazy in the transfer market but loosening up a bit to give the best manager we’ve had in nearly 20 years the players he needs sooner isn’t much to ask.

(y) - yeah fair enough. It's just that when I posted that original message back in 2016, lots of people were disagreeing with it with no backup argument, so touched a footballing nerve. A healing video

Fairplay to you for calling it two years ago. To be fair I could've added a wink emote or two, to my original post. Not always easy to read someone's tone on the internet. ;)

I personally see it being something like this being rotated

Dier/Wanyama

Erriken/Grealish Dele/Winks

Son/Moura Kane/Striker Martial(hopefully)/Lamela

Which in my opinion is a very impressive forward line that could challenge the title

Yeah - Eriksen is not being rotated.

He might rest in lower cup matches, and against lower PL teams following a CL match - but Grealish is not coming here to "rotate" with Eriksen. And ITK suggests he is not coming here to back up Eriksen - which is what it would be if he only played Cup matches and weak opponents between CL matches.

I like Lamela but what's the point of having him now when we already have Grelaish and are probably gonna end up with another winger?

The subtleties suggested in some of the line ups are relatively minimal and adjustable as games progress. It has always been clear that Poch likes players capable of playing in a variety of positions and with intelligence. You often see Spurs change formation ever so slightly 3 times in a single (mainly 2nd) half. To pidgeon hole a player into any given formation(s) is silly imo. If there is space for that player within a squad and we feel we need that player then great.

Maybe the manager and club feel there is better long term prospect with Grealish? At the end of the day you are probably like me, have your own opinions based upon some of the knowledge and facts, but don’t really appreciate the degree of information going on behind the scenes.

Edit - or deficiencies/situations with any given player?

Plus Lamela was the senior player who was left out of our first CL squad as he was injured in the first part of the season.

With Grealish counting as English Association trained, it's easier to include him in our various 25 man squads even if hypothetically he was out injured for a few weeks as Lamela was last season.

Exactly, there may be a whole host of reasons. I’m sure on here we could collectively come up with dozens.

If we can’t get this deal over the line, with Villa in extreme financial trouble, it’s no surprise we haven’t signed anyone yet and ignored Poch’s wishes for early business yet again.

Because he's the only left footed wide player we have. And he's better then Grealish. Even if we get Martial, he is right footed and plays on the left. If we got Malcom or Bale then yes, selling Lamela would maybe make sense (even tho I would be against it) but replacing Lamela with Grealish makes no sense.
