In the same way that Dele was when he joined.

Same as almost all of our squad.

Who was our last marquee signing? VDV? Maybe Lloris at a push? Others came to us with potential and have improved with us but wouldn't say we're a marquee signing like Bale, Eriksen, Jan, Dele and even Kane was through our youths.

I can pretty much say Winks will not do it for us. I'm still having nightmares seeing Winks get bullied off the ball at City away. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because he had injuries last season but for me, Winks is just a squad player and certainly not a reliable first 11 player. If you expect him to come in and replace Dembele next season you must rate him alot higher than I do.

Winks was so so poor from about October onwards last season. I hope he improves but I wouldn't bank our season on it.

Not taking into account his magnificent performances against Real Madrid are you ?

If we can get a midfield trio of Winks, Grealish & say Haidara, a very promising kid from Salzburg would you be happy? Trying to figure out the 2nd midfield incoming is a tricky one, especially with not a lot of movement around Dembele or Sissoko at the moment

because Levy's in charge I think the best we can hope for is a talented young'un like Haidara. My first choice mid certainly has Wanyama in it though, and Grealish would be further forward on the left. Where we usually have Dele or Son, so not much value add IMO.

How does a billionaire company get a football club in to this mess.
The size of the Villa squad has been ridiculous. High transfer fees and wages on too many experienced players coming past their prime and losing value very quickly. Horrendous transfer strategy probably not helped by Bruce being from the dark ages in his approach.

If you're gonna spend big, at least spend it on players under 24 who have the potential to increase or at least retain value. For experienced players there's always plenty of free agents around at Championship level.

There's absolutely no way you can ever guarantee yourself promotion from that league just through buying players.

I thought it was because the Chinese government restricted money leaving China so money couldn't be invested in the club by the Chinese owner?

Liverpool have managed to get, arguably, 3 first team starters plus a bench player in and we cant even complete a deal for a kid who's club are in complete financial disarray. Honestly its pathetic.
I know deals are complex but other clubs are managing it so we are clearly not doing something right.

They did have a mad period 2 seasons ago when they spent big on mccormack, hogan and kodija and they flopped. Not so easy to get rid of flops on big wages. Just look at sunderland and jack rodwell.

Probably better to use the loan system and get fringe players from prem clubs then waste all that cash.

City are the exception to that rule.

Oh, and Chelsea.

Oh, and United.

Honestly though what is the hold up of getting our deadwood out the door?

I guess this technically involves Grealish as we've been told incomings are being delayed due to not being able to get rid of our own players. Llorente, Janssen, Nkoudou, Sissoko, etc had all had basically 2 months to find a new club and we've got nothing on any of them?

I'm not too sure but might be something to do with the £150m they got for Coutinho and the fact they are paying 50% over market value for every player. If you can't see the difference then there is no saving you.

I was just about to comment something similar just to vent, but honestly, you said exactly what I wanted to. It's clear Levy have done a tremendous job, especially these last few years, navigating a new stadium and all that, also getting it right with Pochettino, but after last seasons comments from Poch it's just clear we're letting him down once more. He publicly came out saying that he wants business done (somewhat) early and that it's beneficial for new signings to come on the pre-season tour. What do we do? Absolutely nothing. We don't even know who our targets are, besides this 22-year-old championship player of course. And we are now wheeling and dealing with a club 9 days away from liquidation for him, as if it wasn't bad enough. Meanwhile, our rivals are gearing up with 2-3 world class players in their needed positions. So underwhelming.

It doesn't matter if you or anyone else on this forum knows who our targets are.
Of course not, but if there were real interest (hence us knowing that we're after Grealish - several reputable sources have said so) in a player you know as well as me that that information will get out, from one outlet or another. We're still daily linked with new players that are scattering around to clubs raging from Borussia Monchengladbach to Brighton. Just 2 minutes ago we were apparently linked with Quintero...
