Just when I had talked myself into him being a cheap, HG Sissoko replacement... doesn't happen.

We've been in talks all summer, it's not last ditch attempt.
I don't blame the player, but saying him forcing the move was the only way we could have landed him now at the end. He's decided to stay loyal, warm feeling for villains i'm sure, personally I think he just threw his career to remain a local hero.
I don't think we even gave him time to have a sulk.

We had our chances to sign him didn’t we?

Left him and Villa hanging for too long.

£18m - £22m - finally offered up the pre agreed £25m. By then too late.

Should have made it happen when we had the opportunity and not give Villa the chance to shut it down in the last 24 hours.

Yeah before the new owners came in we were given permission to speak to him and discuss personal terms etc. We were told the fee would be £25mil. Obviously we haggled a bit as we do to tie that in with money up front and add ons to total that 25.

My opinion is we didn't move because we were holding out hope of someone else knowing he wanted us and we could match the asking price at any time. When the other deal fell through we went back in for him but the new owners had decided he wasn't for sale at all.

The reason we were all so confident he was coming mid window was because we had agreed the fee, shown him round etc. Yesterday again we were all hearing it was a go because Levy was going to formally bid, which we did but it was too late.

Thanks for the explanation. But this is totally amateurish business from our board, not to secure stuff . This is how I would approach doing business and I know nothing about football transfers.

If the boys got any sense he'll hold off from signing a new deal, get another season under his belt where he gets to solidify his status as a genuine player of quality and then either have 1 year left on his contract or help establish Villa as a team that will play in the Prem.

He's in a good situation so long as he doesn't sign a new deal. If he does that he's going to be bound to them regardless of what division they play their football in next season

I think it would be more likely now that he signs a new deal with clauses allowing him to leave. He won't shit on the club he and his whole family support, and that's why he wouldn't put in an official transfer request even though he desperately wanted to come..

Is he does sign a deal he needs to ensure the clause isn't something that hinders his chances next time around. It'll be interesting to see if he signs such a deal what his release clause would be. If he was concerned about being priced out of the market this next step for him and his agent will be a key one

How is this amateurish?

There's always a player who appears close to signing for us in a window and then the next window, which isn't that far away really, his name isn't even mentioned. I bet Grealish is this years player.

Wonder why the fuck the deal for the ‘other’ player fell through??
And wonder who the other player was. Now that everything is over I would love to hear all the names we were after and have all those cryptics revealed, though it would hurt to know who we could have signed

If that's the case, then fair play to the lad

he has a very good agent mate. if he can negotiate world record transfers I'm sure he can get the best deal for Jack ;)

Jack is playing for his childhood club and earning a good wage for doing so. Given the chance of a career move or staying where he is, it's not such a big deal.

I am interested to see how villa get around FFP though, and the penalties in the championship are truely punitive.

My guess is he was strong armed into going to Chelsea on loan, so RM could get Courtois..

Possible. Or then Ceballos wasn’t allowed to leave as they had let the other one go to Chelsea to get Courtois.
Or we messed up when we had a chance to get either of them sooner (this is the part we don’t know, bad luck or bad judgement by levy).

I disagree. If Real Madrid genuinely wanted to sell they'd have out an option to buy in the loan as well which I believe isn't the case. We'll never know but I don't fancy Kovacic was a realistic target at the £££ being banded around
