As pointed out by Dov in the ITK thread:

eduardosmartez on ftl:

Friend of mine who works in the academy at Norwich has told me that Spurs are close to doing a deal for Jacob Murphy. We've also taken a look at his brother but so far not made an offer for him.

He says that other prem clubs are sniffing around but we are in the driving seat and it's close

Looks a decent talent, and seems his contract runs out in 6 months time. Perfect Levy type signing!

Anyone seen him beyond Youtube?

Surely a very small fee given the contract, for 2 or 3 mill looks a good opportunity a la Demerai Gray from Birmingham

Looks a cracking, young player. Confident, good with either foot. Seems to be more of a wing forward to me. Has the pace to go past people out wide if he's out there but predominantly looks like he wants to be getting goals.

Don't believe it has any bearing on GKN so not sure why people are worrying about that.

Good mate is a Norwich fan and he raves about both the brothers. But then he still raves about Darren Huckerby so not sure how much to listen.

Surley a one for the future player and that he'll be given some time with u23 or going out on a loan for the reminder of the season. Maybe he's back next season and have the same impaqt as Dele Alli..

That's the role gkn is filling already, their profile is remarkably similar, gkn barely makes our bench, how is this kid gonna get anywhere near it without pushing gkn out?

I agree. GKN could need some more minutes on the pitch. I think he showed signs of improvement against Villa in the cup and if he's given some time, I'm sure he's gonna be better

I'd imagine we'd loan him back to Norwich for the rest of the season. Although there is a bit of poisonous atmosphere there at the moment with their attempt to go straight back up again in trouble..

Also, it wouldn't surprise me if this one wasn't being driven by Pleat. We know he's got some responsibility for scouting the lower leagues for us, and has a bit of cache after recommending Alli highly.

Yet you potentially want to cut down any minutes he gets which helps him develop and give them to a player who seems very similar, slowing the development of both.

It'd make sense if Murphy was planned to make an impact in the first team now or was 18/19 but I just can't see where he plays bearing in mind all the players in front of him

Competition for places is always good. 2 players on relatively low wages can scrap it out IMO. The better one gets the shirt and the other one has to up his game. No room for sentiment or favouritism if you want to push on.

Gkn's got competition in the shape of sissoko, son, lamela and eriksen already

So you wouldn't want us to unearth another Dele Alli then. It's a continual process of evolution and the best sides rarely stay together for more than a couple of seasons.

No far from it but I believe we should have plans in place for the players we sign and not just bloat the squad for the sake of it, alli was 2 years younger than Murphy is now.

Gkn hasn't even started a league game for us yet

Don't see how he improves the squad long term as he looks like just another small, direct player who can't break the lines or necessarily dribble past PL defenders. Certainly looked like he was going to fall over a few times rounding League 1 keepers.

We need to get players who have more to their game, and are resultantly dynamic for us and difficult for the opposition. Too often we flirt with this stuff but get a guy like N'Jie instead of a guy like Luciano Vietto, or a guy like Janssen instead of Embolo.

Both would have cost about the same (at least in terms of transfer fees), and I honestly think they would have had a much greater impact on our squad because they can be direct *and* they can pass. Murphy just seems like next year's GKN*, who was this year's N'Jie, and so on.

Our reluctance to invest in premium youth players in the 16-20 bracket would be fine if we weren't dropping huge cash on 2nd tier moneyball types who tend to excel at one aspect of play. Far too risk-averse, which I suppose is partly why the head scout is being transitioned out, but Levy needs to think slightly differently as well as he's driving the philosophy as much as anyone he installs.

Anyway, rant over.

* - GKN did actually look dynamic the other day, albeit in a low-pressure cup fixture.

Murphy and Sessegnon would be a nice window. Loan both back, obviously.
I've just got a feeling Sessegnon may be looking at Rose, and the weakness of the LB position at the likes of City and Chelsea, and be thinking he'd have a better chance elsewhere.

Hard to find fault with that line of thinking on his part...
