So my cousin is from Norfolk and a big Canaries fan

Apparently a lot of the season ticket holders there think Maddison is the best player they've had in the last 30 or so years

Just to cheer us up... (y)

Ahead of Gary Doherty? Sorry but I don't believe it.

For all the things Levy’s criticised for, failure to sing young British talent is not one I expected considering we’ve done far better business in this area than every other premier league club over the past two decades. That we’ve not done anything in this area lately I imagine relates to our Dele transfer, which made all the lower league clubs put a premium on their young talent in case they had a Dele themselves. Therefore, suddenly it becomes a question of ‘is this person worth £20m more than our best academy graduate’ whereas just three years ago that figure was 75% lower.

Would rather see Onomah finally break through or Skipp get involved, as well as poor old Winksy establish himself further.

Good mate of mine is a Norwich fan. Absolutely raves about him.

When he left Coventry it was made clear he wanted to play.

Not convinced he would be a starter for us so no need to be criticising the club for not buying him.

This Dele thing is going to wear out eventually though. It’s basically the one player we can hang our hat on and eventually it’s going to be so long ago we can’t anymore.

Robinson Walker Dawson Rose Huddlestone Carrick Lennon Dele Bale Defoe. All signed from at least one league below, all became established first teamers with us, all became international footballers with us, all young and British at the point of signing, and all eventually sold at a profit. Combined fees: £34m (and that’s overestimating the more ambiguous fees). I’d say there’s more than just Dele to hang our hats on. I’d say that over the same 13 year time period, no other club has signed so many young British unproven players and developed them into first team stars.

That’s even older!

Eventually we’re going to have to actually do it again or stop giving ourselves that tag. Which is exactly the point I’m making.

You say that as if other clubs are actively outshining us here. Name on player that has moved to our league from below since Dele who has made significant impact, who would also be good enough for our squad?

I was posting about this during the last days of the transfer window. It seems mad that we've given up on this way of recruiting.

I'd even also go further back than that when we really started in the late 90s with the recruitment by Pleat of Gardiner, Davies, Etherington and Docherty (also not as successive this was our first forray into buying up young promising players from the lower leagues).

We are a different team now. Such players unless they are truly exceptional as was/is Dele Alli are unlikely to get enough opportunities to blossom when we are fighting for a top 4 finish and to do well in the Champions League. We need top quality players who are more or less proven and it seems they are too expensive for us right now or they still prefer to go elsewhere.

A couple of punts are still OK but as we are seeing the slightest sign that the player is possibly going to be exceptional and the price rapidly becomes ridiculous.

I'm sure I read somewhere that we tried to buy a guy called Sessegnon and another one called Grealish, unfortunately we got neither (yet) but we did try. By the way does Kieran Trippier count? I'd say he did.

Well qualify significant impact - Because I think Joe Gomez, Mason Holgate, Demarai Gray, Ademola Lookman, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Alfie Mawson, Lewis Cook, Nick Pope, Andrew Robertson, Jordan Pickford, Harry Maguire, and Will Hughes would all improve our squad.

It would be good to do a Chelski and hoover up the 'punts' but we are not there yet!

An article has appeared about him in the Telegraph on a night out a few years back as a friend of his got done for assault. Particularly enlightening are these quotes:

"He said 'Do you know who I am?' It was quite friendly, not at all aggressive," she said.
"We said 'We don't know, why would we?' He said 'I'm James Maddison, I play for Norwich City.'
"When we said we didn't know, he changed a bit and started talking about his trainers.
"He said he earns £7,000 per week. He said he earns more in a month than we do in a year. He didn't ask what I did. He said his shoes were worth more than our outfits."

On the reddit discussion for this article a few Coventry locals are suggesting this is a regular occurrence for Maddison.

Obviously a young lad but might be a reason why our interest called given how into "character' Poch is.

If that's true he sounds like a cock, but doubtful out of the ordinary for a kid who's had too much too young - he looks a talented player

okay, significant impact: major positive first team contribution to our improvement. Hence why I didn’t list people like Sean Davis or Kyle Naughton.

If you think any of those would make a major positive impact on our first team, you severely underrate our squad.

You’re forgetting that to make an impact, a player has to play. Apart from Andrew Robertson, who was certainly not an uncovered cheap gem with two years of experience in this league already for Hull, none would ever play enough to make an impact.

So a really young player from the lower leagues has to have played a whole bunch and made a massive impact since Dele arrived?

You’ve made it so narrow that basically no one except Dele can qualify.

Which is ridiculous. Other teams have some great young players - some English some foreign. We aren’t the king of the hill of it.

Frankly if we buy zero players we for sure won’t be the king of the hill of it.

Literally every single one of those players I listed could have made a positive contribution for us last year. Whether that be playing instead of Sissoko or covering for injuries.

Let's be fair here, it's absurd to pretend that we are the only club that has signed good players from lower leagues. You don't always have to defend the club to the hilt. There's room for constructive criticism.

I listed about ten other players who made huge impacts who we signed under similar circumstances, not really my problem that you’re ignoring that.

I don’t believe we are the only club to do so, I just think that of all the criticisms that can currently be levelled at us, failure to take advantage of lower league talent is not one of them.
