Is it true that his contract is up end of season? Not like Levy to allow such an important player to run it down. Be a huge blow to lose him and potentially Toby in same year.

Certainly, it's a very strange situation that we've allowed Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Dembele and Eriksen to all run their contracts down to under 2 years remaining. That's what Arsenal have been doing for years and it's not only handed the dynamic of power over to the players to dictate their future, but also cost the club 10s of millions in the transfer market.

I do wonder if the stadium build has become so all encompassing that eyes have been taken off the ball on the playing side. Clearly we were not well prepared for the transfer window, and it's so anti Levy's MO to allow this situation to occur. It's not as if they are bit part players either, it's nearly half our first choice outfield 11.

You think the stadium has distracted everyone at the club to the extent they forgot to extend players contracts?

Levy's been ignoring all those calls from the agents and has proritised the cheese room.

Much as I love him, it appears that we have him sewn up until he’s 33 should we wish. Therefore, absolutely no reason to panic, by then I’m hoping both him and Toby have been succeeded quite frankly.

but we never let Toby run his down, he was offered a very good contract in January, accepted it, for his old man to change his mind before he put pen to paper.

Eriksen still has a lengthy 1 I believe, just needs to have it improved in line with the new wages.

Dembele is down to fitness issues, and wanting a 3 year contract. I would expect either he goes in January for a small fee or as a free in the summer

Jan is the 1 I'm shocked about, by sounds of it he hasn't had the improvements others have received year in year out, and is probably pissed off, or has always turned them down and is pissed off about never being given the captaincy. Has only ever had 1 bad season, AVB's last season

Not sure situation is odd at all tbh. Vertonghen and dembele are 32 in summer. We have option to extend jan a year which seems sensible. Dembele will clearly be done by end of this season and nobody would be offering him a new contract. Eriksen is still 2 years and hopefully be sorted. Alderweireld has really to date been the only saga. So not really sure what all the drama is about.

This happens at all clubs, especially when players are very good, and also when they are the wrong side of 30. Is anyone seriously suggesting that we should have sold Toby, Jan, Dembele and Eriksen this summer as they are in less than 2 years of contract? The power is with the players and the agents, especially after Kane signed a bumper deal worth £200k per week. I'm sure these players are looking for parity and Levy will need to find the sweep spot between £140k and £200k per week to appease them, or decide to replace with younger, better players. For me...

  • Eriksen is worth parity with Kane as he could earn that elsewhere and is one of our crown jewel assets.
  • Dembele is probably more concerned with the length of the new contract as it's probably his last one. He will want three years and Levy will want 1 year with an option for another. It pains me to say it as I am a big fan, but if he cannot play two games a week now we cannot give him a long contract and if it bcomes an impasses then we probably should be looking to cash in and replace.
  • I think Jan has another 3 years at the top and will probably become better (as most CBs do towards their mid thirties if physically fit). He deserves a new deal and Levy needs to find the right amount ... £160k per week would probably do it.
  • Toby ... well, hopefully he realises he won't get the £180k per week elsewhere now, and hopefully Levy will give him another chance to sign his £140k per week deal that was agreed last season, and hopefully he will sign it. Don't rule out Levy giving him a better pay deal now and still selling him next summer once the £25M release clause is not in his new contract.

Thought I'd bump this thread

Any news on Jan signing an extension to his contract?

Not relishing the prospect of losing both Jan and Toby at the end of this upcoming season.

Rumors that he'll be handed a two tear contract going around.

Tbh I don't think there's any danger whatsoever of losing Jan anytime soon anyway.

We activated an extra year on his contract at the end of the season. So one year left...prob worth another year after that at least

It'll be an end of an era when Jan goes. What a player and criminally underrated outside of spurs. For my money he's a better all round player than Alderweireld.

I'd hope he has 2 or 3 years left in him, I cant imagine a defense without him in it.

We've been spoilt with those 2 as our primary defensive pair, any partnership that follows will have a hard time living up to them.

He'll be 33 before the end of the season so I'd be amazed if he's offered a new deal. Danny Rose is 29 and he's already said the club rarely offer contracts to people approaching 30 as policy.

I think both Sanchez and Foyth were brought in with Toby and Jan leaving in mind.

Best all around player I've ever seen in a Spurs shirt. Simultaneously our best defensive and attacking player at times. I'd offer him another deal, even if he only became backup eventually.

Offer him a new contract for a few years. Then let him go back to Ajax to retire there if that’s what he wants to do.

Now that we're announcing contracts I'm hoping he's next after Winks and Davies. He's got at least another 3 seasons at the highest level if he can avoid injury.
