He says he thinks he can play for another 4-5 years. Assuming he avoids serious injury, he has the right style of play to be effective in his mid-30s.

He also says he wants to live in Amsterdam after he retires. He may or may not want to play again for Ajax before he packs it in.

There's an obvious synergy and, I think, a hint being delivered, that there is a deal that can be done for him to play for Spurs for another 2-3 years before he moves on to a less intense league.

One doesn't expect Levy to endorse a deal that would lumber us with a 36-year-old defender on high wages. It's not Pochettino's preferred approach to management. So it sounds as if Vertonghen is saying "I'd consider 3 years if you want to talk".

Works for me.

That is very strange because he had previously said that he didn't think he could last very long the way Poch wants him to play. He said something like he could not go beyond 32 or 33 with us.

I never saw that, but it may be that he said that when he was injured. Being injured has definite effects on the mentality of any athlete/footballer. Many have to be very careful with their mental health when they're on crutches or in the gym, instead of being on the training ground and playing competitive matches.

Is there that big a difference between 34/35 and 33? They're close enough to depend on one's mood from day to day.

Could you be confusing him with Dembele?

I've nothing against extending but at the same time the club need to be mindful (and I'm sure they are) that we're getting to the stage where a number of players are reaching the age where they will either be signing one last contract with the club or be moved on before any deal expires.

Vertonghen (31), Lloris (31), Trippier (28), Sissoko (29), Toby (29) and Danny Rose (28) are the obvious candidates aside from the really obvious ones such as Dembele, Llorente etc etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if we cashed in on one or two before that choice gets taken out of our hands.
