They grabbed refuse bags and cleaned up after themselves before leaving the stadium following their team’s match against the African side.

Thoughtful or not..

That's brilliant. I really love that. I saw a program on expats living in Japan and they all extolled how honest and helpful they are. If it wasn't for the xenophobia of some it would be my ideal place to live.

The Japanese identify stronlgy with the English. They see themselves, like the English, as being an Island race, different (and superior) to their more numerous continental neighbours, and they consider politeness and order to be of paramount importance which they think the English do too.

Vast generalisations, but nonetheless it's a truism that the Japanese consider themselves and the English to be very similar

I watched a documentary on this sushi seller in Japan, Jiro dreams of Sushi, which I really enjoyed. After watching it I thought if I ever visit Japan I'd give up my vegan ways and visit Jiro's shop for a quick bite. Turns out this sweet old man is massively racist, and openly bans non Japanese from coming, I think he even has a sign.
I've done him a slight disservice as I think he'll allow you to enter with a Japanese person, but still...I've pretty much lived my whole life in London, so my views are warped in regards to the UK as a whole, but I couldn't imagine a restaurant being so openly racist in Blighty.
I've subsequently found out this is not massively uncommon in Japan, which is slightly off putting.

You really have to take your hat off to them for this, nothing fucks me off more than people dropping litter when just feet away from a bin. It really isnt that hard to take a plastic bag with out to any event to put your rubbish in, it wouldn't be that much of a chore. It is however a chore for a few people to try and clean up after 40,000 or 50,000.

You can't just pop in for a quick bite, there's a 3 month waiting list and it's $300 for set menu, i think 20 plates, extra for drinks....father-in-law has ate there.

I not sure he's racist in the broad sense but could be...They are uncomfortable with foreigners who can't speak Japanese as they like to discuss the sushi and interact with their customers....I doubt he would have had a sign as many foreign dignitaries, celebs always want to go in there..

But it is true it's not uncommon...

Modern Japanese culture revolves a lot around respect for your neighbour etc. Which is unsurprising when you consider how many of them live in such close proximity to each other... signs on public transport saying not to use your mobile out of respect etc.

Japan's a great place; I'd love to go back. It's vastly more civilised than pretty much anywhere else I've been. That said, I suspect it's barking mad under the surface (in some ways anyway).

Despite the odd bit of suspicion, I found the Japanese to be warm and welcoming. I'd probably feel different if I'd tried to get into a geisha bar in Kyoto.

Tokyo's pretty much spotless so I'm not remotely surprised to see the Japanese fans do this.

This was my experience of Japan also. I would like to go back and discover more of the country, other than the big cities.

My wife's been learning Japanese and is really enjoying it. She's teaching me what she learns so we can communicate better when we go out there again. Might even stay for a few months if possible.
