Jermaine Jenas has issued a rallying cry to Tottenham, insisting they have to pick themselves up from the ‘heartbreak’ of defeat in the Carling Cup final.

Spurs slipped to defeat to Manchester United on penalties, having pushed The Red Devils for 120 minutes.

Jenas admits the defeat has left Spurs mentally and physically drained, but feels there were positives to take into their relegation battle.

“Physically and mentally it is draining and when you don’t win at the end of it, it is heartbreaking,” Jenas told Setanta Sports News.

“You go through an abundance of emotions, but we have got to pick ourselves up. We don’t have time to dwell on it.

”We have done well in the competition, come to Wembley, the fans were unbelievable and it is unfortunate we could not win the trophy, but it is back to business now.

“It was a strong performance, the game was in the balance throughout, but we can take a lot out of today, there was a lot of courage and effort and if we put in performances like that then we will be okay.”

i honestly do love jj, but this is coming from a guy who shows no heart on the field. i know it's not true to say this, but it does sound a bit: easy for him to say.

It's not like luka or lennon would say the same after their performances.

Did JJ show no heart yesterday?? I'm not his biggest fan, but yesterday he ran himself into the ground alongside Luka (can't believe he was overlooked for MotM), Zok and Lennon. He was everywhere. I don't think it's ever easy to pick yourself up after matches like yesterday, fair play to Jenas for getting focussed on what matters right now: M'boro.

I saw a lot fo heart from JJ yesterday. I think he was constantly closing players down and getting tackles in. Utd were limited to only a small handful of chances and you don't achieve that if one of your centre mids isn't playing effectively.

I will confess to being in the 'anti-Jenas' brigade if you like, not to the point of getting on his back during games but I think he often contributes very little, particularly when I can't help thinking he has the capacity to do so much more. In saying that I have to say I thought he was excellent yesterday, and showed what he can do. If only he did it week in week out like top drawer midfielders do he wouldn't infuriate me so much.

Jenas was great yesterday - ran forever, broke up play, made important tackles and pass the ball well (and forward).

I really want to see him forge a good partnership with Palacios.

Jenas had a really good game yesterday like he did at the wembley final last year,
to me we look a much stronger team when he plays but i agree that he needs to kick on now & consistently play like this, taking this form into our next cup final against boro...

If MoM has ever gone to someone from the losing side I would be surprised. I agree Luka, and Lennon, were very good but you have to give Foster credit.

Stick modric in the middle with Palacios and put Bale at Left wing. That will balance the team

I'm also in the anti-jenas brigade, and would like to see him sold in the summer; however, I also have to say he put in a decent enough game yesterday. However, saying he was excellent far oversteps the mark. He's only been that in about three games in his time at spurs - one against the scum in the semi-final last year...

Gomes: 6 didn't save any pens but flawless during the game. I haven't felt more assured about our man inbetween the sticks than I have in 3 years. Automatic number 1 for me. I think harry only dropped him for Hull because he knows he's been slightly injury prone and had to play both against shaktar & manure

Corluka 6.5 back to form after a recent dodgy spell

Dawson 7.5 flawless defensively, one or two too many hoofs

King 6.5 on another day he might've given away a pen, otherwise very good although I don't think his distribution is as good as it was. Dosn't seem to have the same time on the ball as he used to. It is very impressive he can come in and play like that without training - yet he's not the player he once was

BAE 7 again impressive marseling of ronaldo and excellent apart from a couple of near suicide moments

Lennon 8 really dangerous, contributed at the back. The only flaw was he hit the ball straight at the first man too many times after working himself into great positions. A few pull backs might've yeilded results

Jenas 6 worked hard, not everything was sideways and backwards either

Zokora also great work rate, great runs.

Modric 7.5 looked one of the best players on the pitch. He's much more comfortable at LW at the moment. It remains to be seen if he'll ever be able to play CM in a 442 in the premiership. I think he should stay LW for the rest of this season, then arry will have to make the decision.

Pav 2.5 worked hard and put himself about but everything he did on the ball was diabolical

Bent 4 looked like he might nick one at times, but all in all didn't look so dangerous. Ok with holding the ball up

O'hara 3 out of his depth

Bale 4.5 two resonably good runs

Bentley 3 one good ball to Bent, otherwise did nothing

Arry 4...decent tactics to start with but botteld it late on. One thing Ramos was good at was throwing fortune to the wind with his subs. Here Redknapp made the awful mistake of playing for pens, and looking at the takers it was obvious we were going to lose on pens. His persistence with Bentley baffels nearly all fans - to the degree that I feel it must be out of some kind of loyalty to levy who we all know has a penchat for useless english fringe players. Anyway, we had two players on the bench capable of changing a game, and three who are championship standard. Redknapp goes with the three championship players and our fate was sealed. I'm not saying we would've won with Tom and Adel; but at very least with them you know something might happen.

Put Bale on the left side ? what has Bale done all season to be ahead of certain players that have not had a look in the side.

Jenas again contributed nothing significant yesterday in relation to the role he is asked to play.....we had a 'break up play' midfielder in the shape of Zokora who did play well yesterday. I saw no box to box from Jenas and as an attacking midfielder he was invisible leaving everything to Modric - no wonder he was knackered.
  13. BringBack_leGin
I'm not a fan of Jenas but he did very well yesterday.
  14. fazthfc
Do you not think that against UTD's midfield we perhaps needed 2 'break up play' midfielders? Agree that isn't what his usual job is but what if had persific (sp?) instructions to help zokora out and look for Modric or Lennon when on the ball. Let them be our creative midfielders with Jenas and Zokora stopping Utd's midfield and giving them as little time as possible on the ball.

If his duties yesterday were to break up play do you think he had a good game?
  15. SteffenFreund
I think Benty and Zokora impressed me most although my expectations of them weren't high in the first place. They were fully committed

As I sat watching the game I never truly felt that a goal was coming our way (although I hoped it would) and the two reasons are those two. If the much reported clear out comes in summer Bent must be part of it and I also think Pav is not up to it either. We worked hard and created half chances but with those two (and then one) up front we never seemed to frighten then. Only Lennon and to some extent Modric appeared to do it.

I think that is a fair enough review of the players performances, but i can't understand why you think Huddlestone is a better player than Bale and Bale has time on his side.

I find Huddlestone as frustrating to watch as i do Jenas.

I was at the game yesterday and this is the first chance I've had to comment. Leaving the stadium, and still now really, I had a really empty feeling about it all. Not really angry or upset as I usually would be. I think the fact the lads gave it their all helped, but mainly I think its to do with the penalties.

Its easy to say with hindsight but I did turn to my mate at 120 minutes and say "win or lose now, its not going to mean as much now after a penalty shoot out" and I'dve stuck with that whatever the outcome. Obviously i'd rather have won the penalty shoot out and would have celebrated with the best of 'em but I think I wouldve felt empty. Must be a better way to settle a football match, especially a cup final, than that?

With regard to the game, pleased with the way we played generally and definitely the effort but we just looked so toothless up front. Keane or Defoe up front yesterday might have been enough to turn it in our favour. Oh well......
  19. DC_Boy
jj was one of our best players yesterday- he's been one of our best players for years which is why he has been a regular first choice for three very different managers, Jol, JR, HR

He is one of our most consistent performers. When playing at full fitness he rarely puts in a bad game, mostly doing ok to quite good

yesterday he was good or better
