He said becoming a dad spurred him on - which is why Jermaine Jenas celebrated his two goals on Sunday with the cradle rocking sign.
And now he's got even more of a reason to pop open the champagne, his performance against Wigan for Tottenham has ranked him among the three best players in Europe for the past week. According to Setanta, every seven days those stats gurus at Opta pick out the trio who have performed most well across England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
This week Jermaine came third with Mamadou Niang, a striker at Marseille, second for his starring role against Lyon. First was Markus Proll, the goalie at Eintracht Frankfurt who made 13 saves in the 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
There's no doubt JJ put in a superb performance, in fact, Juande Ramos has obviously been sprinkling something on his cornflakes to turn him around they way he has so quickly.
We've debated Jermaine's promise before, he came to Spurs from Newcastle looking like a very decent buy. We paid £7m for him rising to £9m eventually. He's scored 15 goals now in 66 games which is not a bad return from midfield. Seven of those came in his first season. Then he was injured for a fair bit and wasn't the same player on that return.
JJ has always been a Marmite figure with Tottenham fans, you do either love him or hate him and it's fair to say, he doesn't always help himself. He went rapidly downhill in the last bit of Martin Jol's reign and saw himself dropped from the England squad. But under Juande Ramos he seems to be returning to his best form.
Personally I hope it is Gus Poyet's influence and Jermaine does have the skills to emulate his own blistering time in a Spurs shirt. On the plus side, he has pledged himself to the club until 2012 and he did score a cracker against the Gooners this year. On the downside, he can often go missing in action and is a major Jekyl and Hyde.
Talking about the birth of his first child Sancha Natasha, yesterday he told Spurs Official: "The goals were a tribute to her, really. It's a new experience in life. My first love has always been football and then a baby comes along and there is something more important in life."
Well seeing as his missus can't have a baby every week, let's hope it doesn't distract him too much because with a fully fit and firmly on form JJ, Spurs do look more of an attacking threat. He simply needs to put in performances like the one against Wigan time after time - then maybe he'll reach his potential and get a call from whoever's waiting in the wings to replace Steve McClaren at England.
