Jermaine Jenas is third best player in Europe - can that be right?

He said becoming a dad spurred him on - which is why Jermaine Jenas celebrated his two goals on Sunday with the cradle rocking sign.
And now he's got even more of a reason to pop open the champagne, his performance against Wigan for Tottenham has ranked him among the three best players in Europe for the past week. According to Setanta, every seven days those stats gurus at Opta pick out the trio who have performed most well across England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
This week Jermaine came third with Mamadou Niang, a striker at Marseille, second for his starring role against Lyon. First was Markus Proll, the goalie at Eintracht Frankfurt who made 13 saves in the 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
There's no doubt JJ put in a superb performance, in fact, Juande Ramos has obviously been sprinkling something on his cornflakes to turn him around they way he has so quickly.
We've debated Jermaine's promise before, he came to Spurs from Newcastle looking like a very decent buy. We paid £7m for him rising to £9m eventually. He's scored 15 goals now in 66 games which is not a bad return from midfield. Seven of those came in his first season. Then he was injured for a fair bit and wasn't the same player on that return.

JJ has always been a Marmite figure with Tottenham fans, you do either love him or hate him and it's fair to say, he doesn't always help himself. He went rapidly downhill in the last bit of Martin Jol's reign and saw himself dropped from the England squad. But under Juande Ramos he seems to be returning to his best form.
Personally I hope it is Gus Poyet's influence and Jermaine does have the skills to emulate his own blistering time in a Spurs shirt. On the plus side, he has pledged himself to the club until 2012 and he did score a cracker against the Gooners this year. On the downside, he can often go missing in action and is a major Jekyl and Hyde.
Talking about the birth of his first child Sancha Natasha, yesterday he told Spurs Official: "The goals were a tribute to her, really. It's a new experience in life. My first love has always been football and then a baby comes along and there is something more important in life."
Well seeing as his missus can't have a baby every week, let's hope it doesn't distract him too much because with a fully fit and firmly on form JJ, Spurs do look more of an attacking threat. He simply needs to put in performances like the one against Wigan time after time - then maybe he'll reach his potential and get a call from whoever's waiting in the wings to replace Steve McClaren at England.

Dont let the facts ruin the homophobic chanting! ;-)

and yeah...

I think it says enough about the validity of those stats that a player for Einricht Frankfurt (sic) took top spot!

Can't see him over taking Kaka quite yet

Dont forget that few games in Italy took place, the old firm were given a break, it was a pretty piss poor weekend. Still, 3rd isnt bad, but one week isnt enough. The fact this is the first time I've ever heard him being up there is the problem.

Why can't footballers/celebrities ever just call their kids something normal?

Next time one of our players is having a baby, i'm gonna send the club a baby name book which doesn't have names like Sancha-Natasha in, with instructions to pin it up in the dressing room!

I expect it's Sancha Jenas; Natasha being her middle name.

Saying that though, the 'Natasha' does break it up a bit. San-Cha-Gee-Nus doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

That's two games on the trot an Eintracht keeper has put in an epic performance. Check:

from the Bayern game the week before, and their second string saving them from getting totally mullered. Nearly 40 shots on target and a clean sheet! (The sound quality is atrocious, like it was recorded twenty feet underwater.)

This is great news because it will show what an enigma JJ is. When the going gets tough, this guy goes missing. Let's see if he's in the European top three (hundred) after the Spammers game.

I am writing this in an appartment in Huntington Beach California. It is very sunny here. That is all.

JJ played very well against Wigan and credit wher credit is due. Can Ramos get him to do this on a regular basis? We'll see.

16 posts and hardly a single positive comment. Nice one.

One of our players makes the european 'player of the week' lists and all we do is call him shit.
You might think he's shit but he certainly wasn't last week so why not give him a bit of credit? Were you sitting there complaining and calling him shit when he put the ball in the net twice against Wigan?

Mugs.

Apparently there were some total dorks at the Lane who cheered his miss louder than his goals. WTF?

It's no different from Garth Crooks' 'Team of the Week', except that it's from the best European leagues rather than the Premiership alone, and it's not picked by Garth. But it is a compliment to him and to Spurs and should be treated as such.
