Is our best midfielder at the club PERIOD. Stats back this up to the nth degree. It doesn't matter how you look at it, he's our best player in the middle.

So can people please STFU about dropping him.

I think he's a good player but he was crap against Sunderland. He looked too lightweight and in my opinion, didn't contribute much.

best midfeilder or worst midfeilder, it doesn't matter.

What he needs to be doing is stepping it up.

According to statistics he constantly covers more ground than any other player at least at the club, but I think the Premiership in general! He does a lot of tackling and breaking up play and RARELY gives away free-kicks. He is an intelligent player and stands head and shoulders above our other midfielders IMHO.

He has his down points at times but to drop him would be ridiculous.

He is VERY prone to going sideways, but lack of movement around him prohibits him perhaps from being more creative. He’s very good at keeping the ball.

What he needs are more options to the right and left (especially when he brings the ball forward). 9 times out of ten the only option he has is passing to the forwards and most of the time he telegraphs it or the option was never on.

No one can fault the work rate of Jenas sometimes he just needs someone else to step up and have a good game too.

Work rate means nothing if he cant do nothing to help make vital chances for the strikers or pull of a decent shot him self. I can run around the field for 90 mins but dont mean im a class player. See my point ?

Are middfield sucks

Yes but if you watched him (hard on TV as you are only concentrated on the action area and no movement around it) you’d realise that his running is purposeful. Either covering in defence or trying to create space forwards when our defence have the ball.

You are spot on with having no options either side of him. No one sprinting up the wing – usually his only options are sideways or an impossible ball forwards which is inevitably telegraphed.

Running around like a headless chicken won't make our team any better.

Is there any arguement that he does too much running and gets himself into trouble? especially as if it goes wrong he gets a barage of abuse.

I know it was probably one of the worst efforts of the season last year. But at Liverpool I didn't think anyone would run the full length to get the opportunity Jenas missed. But as he didn't finish it - he becomes a joke.

What i'm trying to poorly get at is that he always tries to get involved, not always successfully, and maybe sometimes others have to show the determination he shows to be involved.

I echo the sentiments of the thread starter but, there is already a Jenas thread on the top of page 2.

have either of you ever played the game, do you undertsand the game?

What Jenas gives us is an engine, a 110% commitment (unlike some), he is box to box and even with his injuries he bagged us 7 or 8 goals last year. Take him out and we will be overrun. I suppose to be rated in your book a player has to be able to 'nuts' someone, or cruyff turn someone. You clearly do not see what his role is in our team. Jol clearly does, thank god for that!

I’m not being funny here but he runs his bollocks off every single game. I wish I could say the same for some other players! Yes, he doesn’t get it right all the time but all his attributes add up and he’s still quite young.

He’s by far our best midfielder at the club and although some may say “not hard” etc it still doesn’t deter from the fact he should be playing every game.

It seems he’s just an easy scapegoat because he plays every game. Like I’ve pointed out he does go sideways but I guess I’d prefer him going sideways than lose the ball. You often see him look with despair when he’s trying to play the ball forwards as he just has no one to pick out.

We need to get our push and run style going but we can’t with a midfield of Tainio, Malbranque, Zokora & Jenas...

Great point, and that there is the problem with watching it on the box, you do not get the full picture.

I think when people say he doesnt work hard enough they are not talking about running, covering space; its a case of him not using his obviously gifted abilities.

He can show a lightning turn of pace. He can put a good cross in, he can burst past the strikers, he can score goals, he can tackle, he can make inspired passes. However he doesnt do this enough, and it seems like its a case of him not wanting to do it. It was the same when we had Carrick, and its the same with Zokora. There isnt a leader in there, telling the other what to do, so in the end they sit a little too far back.

A case in point would be whenever Robbo has the ball. its going to be a long punt upfield, so get around the strikers and look for the second ball. JJ, and nobody else from midfield, is looking to do that. When we are playing teams that are organised and sitting back we need to push up the pitch, and the midfield doesnt do that. They get bypassed too much, both going forwards and defending, and as our best midfielder Jenas has to take his share of the blame.

Take a player like Tainio - hasnt got the ability, but works his socks off. We know he isnt going to beat someone with pace, he's not really a goal scoring midfielder, he's good in the tackle but his passing isnt anything special. We dont expect anything more than that. Jenas has a lot of boxes ticked, but doesnt do it enough in games. It doesnt help that the midfield is too tight, and I would like to see us play with two wingers to see if JJ steps up and takes responsibility for the centre of the park
