More fool them really, as I can't see Cole getting the central role he wants with Gerrard in the team. One will have to sacrifice their favoured position.

I agree...but that is really kinda missing the point: some Spurs fans are celebrating the fact that we didn't get a player we really tried to get as the manager really rates him, 'cos they believe they understand football better than he does...one of the consquences of this is that both on the field and in terms of morale one of our major rivals is much stronger than they were.

Possibly, although Harry Redknapp was in the Sun today suggesting that Cole would play just behind Torress and Gerrard would take up a central midfield role.

I wonder if this gives us clues as to what Harry planned to do with Cole himself had he signed for us or if he was just gassing to fill up his column

Spot on SP They needed this deal far more than us, I'm pretty sanguine about not getting him but you only have to speak to Liverpool fans to understand that this has completely rejuvenated them, three days ago they were sure there'd be an exodus of players now they're cock-a-hoop and I think thats a feeling running right through the club.

Another little fall-out from the Joe Cole to Liverpool saga...Steven Gerrard has now committed his future to Liverpool on the strength of the Cole deal...just one more reason for those who are cock-a-hoop at the moment 'cos they didn't want us to sign him to stop feeling so smug:-|
He would never have left anyway.......he hasn't got the balls to leave his comfy little backyard

And now they sign 18 year old Danny Wilson from Rangers. Top four means we can't get fuck all done, just like when we were just a top 10 club. Meanwhile Liverpool despite being broke can just sign players with no problem. Seems backasswards to me.

Yeah, if only we could buy an average 18 year old Rangers defender and a crocked midfielder on massive wages. Lets all have a quick panic.

Chill out, we've got targets, if we do a deal we'll do a deal, we've got a whole window!

We offered said crocked midfielder massive wages and he told us to fuck off. We can't get an average 18 year old Ipswich forward to sign.

I never said to panic buy. That would infer we have buying power. We're like a knacker at Harrod's.

All we know is that we wouldnt pay him stupid wages, which is completely justified, Wickham hasnt signed or not signed. Theres no way to infer success or failure yet.

This is very reminiscent to the Duff, Petrov situations. I feel exactly the same as I did about both of those. I really wanted both to come to spurs but appreciated why they didn't, and they both turned out to be lucky breaks - both are great players but spent large periods injured picking up massive wages that we had refused to sanction for just that risk.

I feel exactly the same about Cole. I know he would have brought some really good qualities but I also know that Chelsea got shot when they could easily afford him and he'd been a fantastic servant to them and was not past it, so I always had a snippet of concern that they knew something no-one else does.

I've always rated Benayoun even higher than Cole so Liverpool have not exactly strengthened - the difference being that Cole will almost certainly be made more use of than Benayound was - so they will probably be strong than they were and they definitely needed a player of Cole's type.

This is it, Liverpool offered him so much more than we did because they were so desperate to sign him.

They have no transfer kitty, a new manager, no players similar to Cole and are trying to keep Torres and Gerrard happy. They NEEDED him a lot more than we did.

I'm disappointed but let's move on. A centre forward is of much more concern to us.

Oh no we missed out on Danny Wilson. Were we after him?

Spot the difference.

Spurs qualified for the CL with a good, fairly young team with few deficiencies and an experienced manager.

Liverpool finished well out of the top four with gaping holes in their team, three of their best players are either reaching 30 or have serious injury problems, and they have changed managers and are in financial turmoil.

Which one do you think is going to be in more need to sign players? All your incessant whining on this site is getting really tiresome. It's July 21st and other than Sandro we have signed no one- except our manager and our two best players whose contract merited renewal. God, where's the nearest bridge for crying out loud. Grow some fucking balls and look at the bigger picture.

Exactly. I wanted us to sign him. We didn't. We will sign someone else, who will augment our young and improving squad. Not a problem.
But it has given Liverpool a massive boost, and I find it concerning that some Spurs fans, just because they got into an internet debate about whether we should sign him or not, and got their wish, should actually be more concerned about 'crowing' than that this has undoubtedly given one of our main rivals a massive psychological boost. I'm far more concerned about that than I am that we failed to sign Joe Cole.

We did didn't we? Or was Alan Hutton past 20?

Don't forget Liverpool NEED 'home grown' players and by all accounts can't afford big fees so he was a very important target for them. For us he was more opportunistic. Wilson is under 21 so doesn't affect the quota rule.

We don't have the hinderance of worrying whether our targets fit the criteria, we've already cracked that nut.
