Tbf our academy is only paying dividends due to Sherwood & Ramsey.

Kane, Bentaleb, Carroll & Mason all developed under them

KWP, CCV & Onomah all started under them with sherwood actively the biggest influence in getting them into our academy.

That couldn't be further from the truth.

McDermott has been the top guy in the academy since 2004.

Inglethorpe then was U21 coach from 2005-2012.

Ramsey was U18 coach for a long time, so the 3rd most senior

Sherwood took over when Inglethorpe left and did 18 months in the job. He wasn't popular or successful in the role. Ugo Ehiogu has now been doing that since 2014 and has turned things back round again.

Looks like their guy is leaving so they must be in the market for a new one. I suspect McDermott is the logical choice. Hopefully he stays.

Fom bbc round up:

United are facing more turmoil among their backroom staff with the impending departure of the club's academy chief. Derek Langley is planning to leave the club at the end of the season because of disillusionment about the state of the academy. (Times - subscription only

Hopefully McDermott will stay away due to our current youth success and this that I have highlighted is a big problem

Looks like Levy is going to have to wine and dine McDermott.

If it fails we can always just go and get the Southampton academy boss though...

I'm hoping the conversation between the two clubs goes along the following lines:

Woodward: We want McDermott to run our academy.
Levy: OK. I was going to bring back Sherwood anyway now he's available.
Woodward: Really, why?
Levy: Well, he brought through Kane, Bentaleb, Mason and Carroll in his time here for starters.
Woodward: So you don't want McDermott
Levy: He's OK, but Sherwood saved me millions of pounds in salaries and fees. He's my main man.
Woodward: Interesting (*starts to look up Sherwood's number*)
Levy: Now, then, don't go stealing him from under our noses like you did when I told you I wanted Van Gaal, will you?
Woodward: Of course not, Daniel, wouldn't think of it...
Levy: Bye then :troll:

If we did lose him I hope we have someone we can promote from within to take the job.

Its a specialist position. We'd need someone new.
Just because it's a specialist position doesn't mean you can't hire someone who is doing something else to do that role. Else that would suggest there's a finite amount of people who can do the job and the world would run out of them.

Heck, McDermott himself was a manager and then an assistant manager. It's not like he was running some youth set up elsewhere himself before we got him.

I read an article yesterday (forget where) which was talking about utd and their reshuffle of youth staff which said though they want Mcdermott that he wasn't interested and they hadn't contacted him yet.

Yeah - this is just a tabloid repeat of an old story, where they've left off the crucial final line about him not being interested.

I know this is such an internet thing to say, but I know somebody who knows John McDermott personally

Inigo Montoya
Would he be interested in a move to Utd? McDermott not your acquaintance

Last I knew was that United offered him a job back in like October/November time and he turned it down. Don't know if the thing in the paper now is fresh news or if they just caught on to United wanting him a few months late and don't realize he already rejected us.

Could you put this in the U21 thread :)
