England and Chelsea captain John Terry has admitted a charge of improper conduct for criticising referee Graham Poll after he was sent off during last November's Premier League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

The defender originally asked for a personal hearing but has withdrawn his request and admitted the charge, the FA said on their Web site (www.thefa.com) on Monday.

After the game Terry said Poll had given him conflicting reasons for his second yellow card, a claim denied by the referee.

The charge was brought on the basis that Terry's comments questioned Poll's integrity.

"The case will be dealt with tomorrow by a Disciplinary Commission on the basis of written submissions," the FA said.

This from the news section of the Guardian's Fiver:
"Two months after accusing Graham Poll of giving conflicting reasons for sending him off, John Terry has admitted an FA charge of improper conduct. And we still don't know what he said to Ledley King ..."

They made some joke in the Christmas edition too about a roomful of journos too gutless to ask Terry what exactly he said to King.

Anyone else think this reeks of a cover-up?

He's withdrawn his request for a personal hearing and the FA's slapped this charge of improper conduct for his comments on what Poll said.

I'd love to know what the England captain said to Ledders that also incensed Chimbonda and Zokora among others .... I reckon the FA want this to go away as fast as Terry does.

It stinks of a storm in a tea cup .

Terry (and later Cashley) were acting like arrogant pricks and challenging the authority of the referee . They got brought down to earth and it's finally sunk in .

Zokora is not a hero who stands up for his fellow players , he's a liability who takes any opportunity to get involved whether it is in something which directly concerns him or not .

Assou Ekoto is already on a suspended sentence for violence .

Chimbonda is the only one of those who has any measure of self control .
