    SPURS NEWS:

Martin Jol has backed Paul Robinson to bounce back and prove he is still England's number one keeper.

    Source: Sky Sports

Tottenham shot stopper Robinson has made the England number one jersey his own over the course of the past couple of years, but he has endured an indifferent time in recent months.

He was derided in the media following England's defeat in October, as an air-kick gifted Croatia victory, and on Saturday he spilled a James Milner free-kick against Newcastle which allowed Scott Parker to head home in Spurs' 3-1 loss on Tyneside.

Jol has no doubts Robinson is still England's number one and feels he has the mental strength to bounce back from his recent blunder.

"Robbo is one of the toughest players I know," said Jol. "He has saved us on numerous occasions.

"He had that situation with the England team and he came back strongly from that.

"In every game his reflexes help us and, for us, he's the best in the country."

  1. Boony
He hasnt been on his best form but is that because the defence has been better so he has less to do ? He is still the best keeper in england by far

Just got back from the Villa match. A well deserved win and Robbo played well. He is our best keeper for years. But he should concentrate on the game more and less on waving to the crowd.

Much as I think Robinson is an excellent goalkeeper, I can't agree with that.

Cech is better. Van de Sar is as good. Today, Friedel reminded us of how dominating he was when he was younger - and he's still excellent. Jaaskelainen is in Robinson's class. And I always thought that Antti Niemi was the best of the lot, surely the most underrated.

I think he meant that he's the best English keeper. You can't argue with that.

Best in the Premiership? There's lots of top quality , while I think Cech is the best in the world, I don't think there's much to choose between Robbo and any of Van Der Sar, Lehmann, Niemi, Friedel, Jaaskelainen or (in my opinion the best of the lot) Shay Given.

But I forgot to add ... Robbo is much younger than any of those, and better than they were at his age.

Well that's different. And hard to argue with. But not what he said.

Yes, I forgot to add Given to my list, although I wouldn't rate him as my no. 1. Lehmann is too David James for my liking - great shot stopper, but prone to stupid mistakes. And a cheat.
