    RUMOURS

SPURS boss Martin Jol has tied up his first deal for the January transfer window after agreeing a £2.5million bid for Lens midfielder Adel Taarabt.

    Source: The Mirror

The French Under-21 star, 17, has been to White Hart Lane to look around the club and met Jol.

Taarabt has stalled on a new contract with Lens after attracting interest from the Premiership and the French club are ready to do a deal with Spurs rather than risk going into the compensation process next summer.

Taarabt said: "I have talked to Martin Jol. He really wants to sign me.

I have visited White Hart Lane, I'm in a hurry to be there."

Spurs have also targeted West Brom's centre back Curtis Davies - but Jol clearly wants to bolster his midfield.

The club already has a number of French players, including international defender Pascal Chimbonda, Steed Malbranque and Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

SC Member TOMSPURS posted this on 28th November in Spurs Chat:-

"Deal agreed for 17 year old midfielder, Abdel Taarabt, to sign from Lens. Expected to cost about €3.5mill. Should be announced very soon."

However, I've called the Mirror's story a rumour as it hasn't been confirmed by the Club ............... yet.

anyone know what this kid is like or what position he plays?
  2. spursintheblood
Commoli showing his value methinks. Where in the midfield does this guy play (left...!)? Considering the size of squad and the strength in depth we have, a youth aquisition makes sense.
I don't expect us to be too busy this winter.
  3. Stoof
Well according to the Stats engine which powers Sky Sports, The Guardian etc., he's a central midfielder.

I swear MJ has a fetish for them! Anyways, he's played once for Lens this season - who are second in Ligue 1. That's about as far as the stats take me.

Lots of frenchy kids coming in :-(, preferred the Anglais personally, but they not what they're doing?

so benoit is french! sounds like a good move by jol. buy why another midfielder???

Always like to see us snapping up young players. Also good to see Commoli's French connections are showing there worth. I don't want us to be fielding a team of foreign players, but if we keep a blend like we've got at the moment i'll be happy.
Got to say i've never heard of him, but if they value him at that price having only played one first team game, he must be pretty useful.

No, Benoit is Cameroonian. Cameroon was owned by the British and French after the war but is independent now. Native languages are French and English

Benoit played in the French league for Lens I believed which is probably why he gets called French alot

To be honest I don't want anymore french players after this kid, We may have an english core but I dont want that core shrinking either! We should be lookin at youngsters like Lee Cook, Ryan Jones, Giles Barnes and that kid from Gillingham, I forget his name!

Expect Jol and Commoli to clear a few squad players out in January or if not then it will certainly be in the summer.
  9. newbie
I think he is a left midfielder, at 17 he is one for the future i wouldnt expect him to play for a few years.
  10. bertiebassett
benni was pissed off 4 not being selected for the french world cup team so his loyaties sided with cameroon.
  11. davidmatzdorf
Not quite. He was born in France and is French, but like a lot of French-born players with African parents (e.g., Fredi Kanouté), he has the option to play for the country of his ancestry, so he has agreed to represent Cameroon at football.

That's what was in the press when he signed for us.
  12. Darron
The gillingham player you refer to is matty jarvis. When i was playing in gills youth team he was the one that shone out above the rest. Word around gillingham now is that he will be leaving in jan with the prem his destination!! Seems that charlton are favourites to sign him though.

Is this the kid who had apparent 'attitude' problems but bags of talent (We've been linked with so many kids im losing track of who's who). If so hopefully we've stumbled on a bargin as I have faith in Jol and the backroom to mould him into a model professional.
  14. YIDBOY
I'm sure on the back of the matchday programmes it has a french flag next to Benoit's name! Anyway, who cares, i don't think he's that bothered.....about anything!
This new signing. Isn't he the dude thats supposed to be trouble? I think he walked off the pitch once while playing for Lens reserves because his team mates wouldn't pass to him! I'd kick his french arse all over the place if he does that at Spurs!
  15. Levers

I think he was born in France to Cameroonian parents, but I am being pedantic.
  16. Levers
    But he plays for Cameroon.
  17. sloth
I don't think we can afford to be too picky... if an English player with bags of potential comes available at the right price we should get him, but I can't imagine any scenario in which Levy tells Commolli,

"Yes Damien, I know he's quick. And yes I know his potential and so what Damien if he's snip at 2.5 mil, let him go to Arsenal, because you know what...? I don't want French at any price!!"

Snap them up, develop them and if they're good enough play them, if not ship them on. And do it all with an eye on the first team make-up and club's culture...
  18. Spoilt4_the_spurs
We all say that we want an english core but the truth is good young english talent is being priced out of this world, Giles barnes for £10 million, and thats for a player who could be the next Franny Jeffers. More than anything though is that the kids in europe are cheaper to get and come from better academies. So what is the solution to this pay OTT for an englishman or fair value for a french, spaniard etc
  19. Happy_Yid
Although I am pleased to see us bring on young palyers with lots of promise, and I sincerely hope this kid does well for us, but are we only looking in the French leagues for our talent? how about looking at some great Dutch, Norwegian or swedish talent too.
