Martin Jol is determined to atone for Tottenham's disappointing display at the Emirates Stadium last month when they face rivals Arsenal on Wednesday.

Jol rested Aaron Lennon and Robbie Keane in the 1-1 draw against Fulham in preparation for the Carling Cup semi-final first leg, a clash which has already seen the north London neighbours clash over ticket allocations.

Spurs were defeated 3-0 on their debut at Arsenal's new stadium but the three goals could easily have been ruled out, and the Spurs boss had to bite his lip and wait for his chance to face the Gunners again.

"Arsenal probably had their worst home game ever but we still couldn't give them a good game," said Dutchman Jol, who will find out early this week if his side will get a bye into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.

"I didn't say it after the match but one goal wasn't a penalty and their third was a handball. So I think we were unfortunate but I couldn't say anything because we didn't play well so hopefully we can put that straight now."

Jol could not take risks with Lennon, particularly with injury concerns in other areas.

Skipper Ledley King is still a major doubt for the Arsenal clash with a bruised foot, leaving Anthony Gardner and Michael Dawson as the only fit centre-backs remaining.

Teemu Tainio limped off against Fulham in the first half with an ankle injury, while striker Mido is due to return this week after a groin complaint.

Jol added: "Lennon was injured for a month and played two games in three days - against Newcastle and Cardiff - and I wanted to give him a rest ahead of Arsenal. But he came on because we needed him."

  1. tommyt
    fucking legend.
  2. sundancer
How big a risk is playing King after missing so many games, bigger then having Gardner against the Arse, what do we think?.
  3. StokeSpur
I think Jol should partner Daws and scare the shit outa them lol.

it dosnt sound like Ledders will make it so Cmon big Tone show em what yr made of.

I wonder with him resting Keane (for the most part) against Fulham if he intends to play him left and Steed central or maybe even behind the front two, obviously he's in his plans and i cant see him dropping Defoe or Berbs for this one?

    I cant wait.

    COYS.
  4. sundancer
To drop Defoe would be unfair and wrong, he is bang on form and if we are to get through we need to take a two goal lead to the shithole and we need Defoe to do the buisness.
  5. Pillbug
    Defoe?

Defoe was crap yesterday, although he was offside only 23 times, so he is improving there. He's still under the unfortunate misapprehension that he is good a beating people with his feet, which he ain't.

He's had a good month in what has been the worst month for spurs this season (barring the last 186 months) - I'll agree with you that it its hard to drop him now. Pair that with Jols
's belief that you start someone this year based on how they played against the opponent LAST year, which doesn;t work at ALL -- and we have a recipe for Robbie Keane.

Defoe will start though. How could he not?

I think the team should be: robbo
chimbo daws king(if fit) ekotto( give him a chance to play better against them)
lennon hudd zokora ( give him another chance) malbranque defoe berba

    Subs: cerny
    y.p.lee/gardner
    murphy
    tainio
    keane
  7. cliffo
agree about defoe and berbs starting especially being at the lane where berbs is electric.
just heard that vanpersie will be out for about 6 weeks which rules him out of both legs.
  8. Rooga
Yeah, just heard that. Good news, he's just the kind of smug git that you could imagined scoring against us.

I reckon Wenger will put out pretty much the same team that beat Liverpool 6-3. They did well enough for him, so he thinks they probably deserve another chance. Plus he's arrogant enough to rest his best players and still think he can beat us at the Lane. Up to us to prove him wrong.

As sundancer said, I think we need to take at least a 3 goal lead to theirs. Maybe playing so poorly in the league against them was a blessing, I reckon Jol will have them so fired up for this and the Lane is gonna be rocking.
  9. Rooga
He 2 goal lead, maybe 3 is just wishful thinking?
  10. alfiespurs
So at leat one of the cheats will not be there !
  11. Jacques
so basically.....what are you trying to say?? That Keano should start against the scum based on the fact he played last season and scored against then??
  12. Marty
but van Persie played and even scored against ManUSA, so where have you got that info from? He looked pretty healthy in that game when he came on...

My prediction is an annoyingly tight game against their juniors/reserves that we win 2-1 and then have to work our bollocks off to have a chance to keep after the Immigrants game, bit pessimistic but at least I can hope for a pleasent surprise:wink:
  13. elDiablo
its on the bbc. partial fracture to the 5th metatarsal whilst scoring the equaliser!!! pity!!!!

    :violin:
  14. walworthyid
We won't play as poorly as we did against fulham, because we are at home and it is the scum, but we will need a performance of the magnitude of the chelski game in order to merely win, never mind get the kind of cushion that would be needed to win the tie over all.

If we were to win well, or win and play well, it could give us the confidence to go there and get a result, but I must say that I am not expecting too much. I fancy an entertaining draw, maybe 2-2, and an embarrissing 3-1 defeat.

I really hope that jj and king are back and that we can start fielding a settled side and also so that we can give hudds a couple of weeks rest. Didi and jj were looking good and I am convinced that steed, didi, jj and lennon are our strongest midfield 4.
  15. littlemandefoe
Yea, start berbs and defoe at the lane...see what they produce. They work very well together at home. Still deciding on whether Ekotto should start.

2-0 to the mighty tottenham! yiddo
  16. AJ
I think that our starting line-up will be the same as a against Fulham, with the exceptions of Lennon replacing Ghaly and Zokora replacing the injured Tainio. If King is fit, he obviously comes in for Gardner, but don't get your hopes up. If Gardner can keep focused, he should do ok against the goons because he is quite fast and that is a very good thing against a team as fast as them. I wasn't too sad to hear that van Persie got injured, because he would've propably started and been one of their main attacking threats.
  17. oultima
"Jol eyeing revenge" isnt it what we always hear him saying. The final result will be " We could'nt seize our chances, ref was poor, pitch was bad"...guys, lets be practical, look at the form of the arse now, and look at the pathetic way we play, it will be nice if we battle a nil-nil draw, but when the last time spurs kept a clean sheet in the EPL? maybe against Championship team like cardiff...i will just pray.
  18. Rooga
Good job it's not a Premiership game then.

Less of the negativity please. Of course it's going to be a tough game, but on our day we can beat anyone at home.
  19. gloryglory
Don't think the team's in any doubt, apart from King's fitness test.

No WAY will Assou-Ekotto be in. Right or wrong, Jol prefers Lee, and this is the last game that he would risk Assou-Ekotto in after what happened up the road.

With Tainio out, Zokora is a dead cert, as is Lennon, and unless Jenas makes a miraculous recovery, the midfield quartet will be completed by Huddlestone and Malbranque, with Berbatov and Defoe up front.

Is that good enough to win? If we play like we did against Newcastle, then yes. But we'd need to win by a few, and that is a very tall order indeed.
