TOTTENHAM boss Martin Jol is set to win the £4million race to sign Watford winger Ashley Young - despite suffering a late hitch.

Jol was prepared to offer winger Wayne Routledge - currently on loan at Fulham - as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Young, 22, who has also been courted by Liverpool and Arsenal.

But Routledge did not want to swap his loan deal with Fulham for a relegation scrap and that has left Tottenham desperately trying to thrash out a straight cash deal or a transfer involving defender Calum Davenport.

But Jol remains in the box seat for Young who has impressed this season despite Watford's desperate form.

Dutchman Jol has a huge squad and is trying to offload the likes of full-back Paul Stalteri, veteran Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids, wideman Reto Ziegler and they may allow Routledge to go if the right offer comes along.

But Tottenham will have problems persuading any of their available players to go to Aidy Boothroyd's doomed Watford.

Tottenham are still keen on Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing but the £12m asking price is way too high for them while they have also been frustrated in their attempts to get West Brom's Curtis Davies.

They will, however, allow Anthony Gardner to join West Ham if the two clubs can agree terms.

Spurs have also enquired about Manchester City's Sylvain Distin but he is likely to wait until the end of the season before moving on a lucrative Bosman-style free transfer.

Tottenham have had interest in Davids from his former club Ajax and they would allow him to leave on a free transfer if anyone matches his £50,000-a-week wages.

Full-back Stalteri has been offered to Everton while Davenport is a target for West Ham and Charlton.

Young's departure from Watford will give Boothroyd some much-needed cash to spend in the transfer market.

Boothroyd did at least sign Lee Williamson and Will Hoskins from Rotherham yesterday as he prepares for the departure of his star winger.

Spurs move for Anderlecht fullback Vanden Borre

Tottenham are in talks with Anderlecht for fullback Anthony vanden Borre.

The young Belgium international is being put up for sale by Anderlecht during this month's market and has been the subject of talks with Spain's Real Betis. Spurs boss Martin Jol is also keen.

with King less than fit and poss facing an op/longer lay off can't see Davenport or Gardner going unless we have someone else lined up. Think both have done OK recently, in fact the previously imperious Dawson has had more than one dodgy moment in the absesnce of Ledley

Would love to get Vanden Borre - can he also play center back? I have only ever watched him play right (wing) back!
  3. fatspur
see Routledge playing for Fullham and thus cup-tied, so no plans to have him back any time soon. Interestingly Young only on bench for Watford

Well the Mirror do talk shite but Ashley Young is worth talking about. Finally, a quality left-winger, who is young and English! I could only put Jerome Thomas or Kieron Richardson in that bracket, but they have always been inconsistent.

I think he could one day play for England if he is a regular. He can flourish under BMJ and may well show everyone what a great player he is.

We desperately need the balance and with 3 strikers crooked, as we have had recently, he will be all we need, with the exception of a quality CB - especially if we loose Davs or Big Ant! I haven't sen Vanden Borre but he will need time to adjust if he does come.

Vanden Borre would be a good acuisition, can play right back of center back, similar to micah richards but older and thus more european experience

i do not think that young will be bought for the first team, he's more likely gonna be an understudy for malbranque since the later is doing quite well playing on the left. a good squad addition nevertheless

i heard a rumour that apperently kings career is finished thats why we are so desperate 2 get a defender - i dnt believe and i hope there is no trueth in it

Mary Poppins, whats that? Where exactly did you hear that shite?

i heard that from someone over at football365, its gotta be bullshit. it is bullshit. they love winding each other up....

I really am getting fed up with all of this "spurs are willing to let davenport go" crap and cannot believe the number of spurs fans who seem to think he is not good enough. That lad is class, he is quicker than Dawson, he is better on the ball than Dawson or Gardner and as good as ledley. He is commanding in the air, he looks dangerous getting forward.

There is not better cover at his age in the prem. Why the hell should we spend silly money on the likes of Ferdinand or Davies when we have a player who is better than both of them?

If Dawson is injured I am more than comfortable with the idea that Dav rather than Gardner will play with Ledley.

    Rant over!

I quite like Young but his final ball is poor, he has touch and pace but for me is very similar to Routledge in that he lacks end product.

I am not sure that swapping routledge for young would really be a step forward and if anything wayne has begun to improve since getting a run of games fo Fulham.

    Led's carreer finish? Bollocks

The bad news is that whilst King's career is not over he struggles after every game with both knee and hip injuries....he can't train for two or three days after a match, which makes it near on impossible for him to be fit for more than one game a week.

This does mean however, that he will never be transferred to another club as he is virtually un-insurable....meaning that even if Chelsea or Man Utd were to offer £20M his transfer would never be sanctioned as he would fail the medical.

Did you just tell me Davenport is as good as King? If so, you're wrong. He's good but not that good.

Agree with walworthyid regarding davenport. We haven't seen the best of him yet and it seems as if he is just starting to settle in alongside daws. If he continues to play steady football there, all sorts of good things can happen: We can give ledley a real rest so that hopefully he can recover; maybe go to a sort of mini-rotation system and give daws a rest as well.(daws has played so much this season, injured or not he still performs....he's my player of the year so far.) I don;t think anyone is suggesting he is as good as king, but, in certain games he can provide very adequate cover for him. Crazy to let him go....maybe tony but not callum.

Think he just said that he was as good on the ball as Ledley which i think he is. Dawson always tends to try the 60 or 70 yard pass which comes off very rarely whereas Dav and Ledders will always look to take the ball on if they can.

I dont think we will find a better back up in the centre back position. Certainly not one who's willing to be back up but as time goes on he may want to move on if he's not playing regular football.

Vanden Borre ?????? can play only right back and do not be first choice on anderlecht ( to lazy and to bad player)
  16. Ali
I also agree regarding Davenport. I posted somewhere else a couple of days ago that as far as I can see, if one out of Dav or Gardner were to go, it would surely have to be Gardner. I believe he is 26 or 27 now, and surely at that age he has to decide whether to move to get regular first-team football, or stay at Spurs and just fade away completely. A move to West Ham, if it is really being discussed, would be perfect for all parties in my opinion. They may be in a bad league position right now, but they are still a high profile team.

The fact that Davenport has been chosen recently as back-up ahead of him suggests that Jol also prefers Davenport, who is younger, quicker, less mistake-prone and also offers a potent threat upfront. He has already scored one goal for us at Man City this season, and has come close a number of other times. I don't really see how there could be a choice.
  17. walworthyid
As good as ledley on the ball! Ledley is on a different planet in terms of his overall ability to defend.

What I mean is that davenport is prepared to use the ball, hold the ball and take people on. He has very good feet and is composed in posession. In that regard I think he is alot better than daws and as good as leds.
  18. smudger
just nearly choked on my lunch davenport as good as king. yeah alright  . dont really want to slate any spurs player but davenport is crap. too shakey. maybe just lacking confidence i hope thats the case.

    COYS!!!!!
  19. Ali
You're not reading it. As good as Ledley ON THE BALL. Not overall as a player.
