Martin Jol has warned his stars they will be paying the fine if Spurs are ever punished again for brawling.

    Source: The Mirror

The north Londoners are facing an FA charge of failing to control their players following their punch-up with Middlesbrough during the 2-1 win on Tuesday.

Boro captain George Boateng successfully appealed against his red card yesterday but there is a growing belief that the appeal of Spurs' Didier Zokora - who ran 25 yards to confront Boateng - will not be so fortunate. Fed-up Jol, who had called for his men to toughen up all season, admits Soho Square chiefs were right to put his club in the dock after his players misinterpreted his comments.

The Spurs boss said: "The FA were right to charge us. You cannot have mass brawls on the pitch because if they start fighting it is a bad example.

"We had a similar situation against Blackburn and then we got a warning. It was a wrong example for us to show a fighting spirit. That's not the kind of fighting spirit I meant. I have told the players if they do it again we will get a fine and they will have to pay for it the next time. And it will not be a small fine."

Meanwhile, Jol has delivered an amazing put-down to Jermain Defoe following the news that Robbie Keane - who scored the winner against Boro - will be out for six weeks with a medial-ligament injury.

Jol said: "Now we are at a disadvantage because we are going to have to play Defoe. You saw the other night that Keane came on, he had one chance and he took it."

I'm sure this has been taken out of context. Jol probably meant we are at a disadvantage as we HAVE to play Defoe in every game and we don't have the option of replacing one with the other during games or rotating. Losing Keano is obviously a disadavantage but its no slight on Defoe.

    Typical scummy Mirror:evil: :duh:

    My thoughts exactly

agree that they should pay themselves but they shouldnt if they protect our own players like tuesday nite

Does sound a bit off that last line doesnt it? I'm sure its not meant that way. I believe Jol when he says Defoe is invaluable to the team, I just think he prefers Keano more.

Come on Jermain, show those doubters and get double figures by the new year!

Another good move by M.J. we should make the players more accountable for there actions, and like others I believe that his comments about Defoe are out of context.
  6. jurgenthegreat
still a funny comment though, and great that he is standing up to the players about brawling, arsene wenger would have made some moronic excuse as usual, which is why MJ is a legend

i thought jol said we weren't appealing against the zokora red.

    Brawl

Have to say I did not see the incident, but would like to see M Jol supporting his players more. At the end of the day they got a victory. I think Jol should be supporting Zakora, not trying to undermine his confidence. And the same goes for Jermaine.

I would also like to see Barnard given more of a chance if he is fit.

so am i right to say you would like Jol to be more like Wanker? protecting his players even when in the wrong? or are you saying that you'd like Jol to stand up for Zokora in this individual case? (protecting lennon)

    "I zizzent zee anythinz"

    zzzzzzzzzzz

    Wanker

By Wanker I guess you mean Wenger.

In one word yes, I would like the players to have the full support of the Manager. If the Manager says after the Arsenal game that he would like to see more fight, why on earth is he then berating Zakora and the rest of the team for doing exactly what he asked for.

A little more consistency would be a good thing. Did you ever hear of Ferguson, Mourinho or Wenger berate their players in public when they show a bit of fight for their team?

we're not. but it seems we might appeal about the fine. but i doubt we will.

For crying out loud, in this day and age surely we are not condoning 'the wrong fighting spirit'. Its quite clear what MJ wants and he's right for berating players who dont act accordingly. The fighting spirit we want is to dig our heals in, take the higher ground and play superior football.

i'll use what SouthLondonSpur said to reply to your post:

Dream on! Name one winning team that does not have a fighter in it. Barcelona have Deco, Real Madrid had Zidane, Man United had Keane and Cantona. These are players that when the going gets tough, the tough get going!

As for the Defoe comment by Jol, even JD has said that he doesn't read the papers so i this will go in the bin like the rag it was written on.

What is WRONG with Jol? Has he not learned that playing nice with the FA gets you no where? He should back the players, at least nominally. he could say, he understand where the charges came from and has told the players to allow the ref to handle matters. On the other hand the players really did nothing wrong, and that include Zokora.

Jol may have had a good year last year, but I know I wouldn;t want him as my boss. A good boss protects you from outside wrath.

I find this very disappointing and indicative of a character flaw.
  17. Pillbug
And I didn;t even SEE the defoe quote. I am starting to think Mr Jol may be a facking idiot. I'll give the benefit of the doubt that english is not his first language, but......

    that is terrible.
  18. Shirtfront
Have some faith. On both counts:

    1. The quote was taken out of context. See later posts.

    2. In the same vein, perhaps trust Jol's man management skills in relation to the brawl as well? Maybe, just maybe, he takes the view that by admitting when we are at fault and giving the players a kick up the arse publicly when it is deserved, when he does support them publicly, when he does make an appeal, when he does encourage them, it will actually be taken seriously - because he is a man of integrity. Ever heard of the boy who cried wolf? His name was Jose Wenger.
