Martin Jol admits he is not unduly concerned at Jermain Defoe's reaction to being substituted at the weekend, despite the fact his striker appeared to strike the dugout as he left the field.
Defoe seemed to be less than enamoured with his manager's decision to replace him in the second half of the 1-1 stalemate with Fulham, as the England international made way for Robbie Keane.
In fine form this season after last term's disappointment, Defoe has struck 14 goals already and clearly felt he could have added to that total at Craven Cottage.
While Jol believes the manner in which Defoe reacted is not ideal, it would appear that he understands, to a certain extent, the frustration he must have felt.
"We always talk about that and we do what we have to do," said Jol. "The team is the most important thing. It's about team spirit.
"They can be disappointed and not show it - that is always what we like. But they are human beings and sometimes they do that. Robbie Keane did it against Birmingham, so it can happen - once.
"But I will have a chat with Jermain."
Jol concedes that the pressure to deliver is perhaps felt most strongly by the club's strikers and with Tottenham housing four top quality hit-men in their ranks, the Dutchman is full of praise for the manner in which Defoe has not grumbled when left out at times.
"It is an awful situation for a striker because if you play you always have to score," said Jol. "And if you don't score there are always other strikers to come on.
"If you know Jermain he is one of the best team players around because he has put up with this situation for the last two-and-a-half years.
"I thought we didn't look dangerous and we had Robbie there.
"But don't forget the other day (against Cardiff in midweek) Jermain was there and he came on and within minutes he scored. "Robbie did the same against Middlesbrough before he was injured."

This is not a bad thing in my eyes it just proves how hungry to play Defoe is. As long as BMJ dont let this get out of hand!

    The situation is so annoying.

This endless stream of meaningless speculation is really becoming tiresome...

This happens all the time when players are substituted, plus the fact he was probably frustrated with the match. I see nothing unusual here, just the papers making something out of nothing again

    Da Foe

Defoe didn't look great against da foe.... I really wish he'd stop trying to crack the offside trap all the time -- he never scores that way.

Generally speaking, I thought it was a pretty poor performance all around, and the other north london club will be heartened.

However Defoe's form has been of late, I will look forward to seeing more of Keano's spark, even if it means more rumourmongering about his transfer.

And I do have to worry: If we don't qualify this year, whether we can hold on to all our strikers. If we slide to 10th, I do think someone will be itching to leave.

that scumbag arsenal biased rag the daily mail, the shitstain on the underwear of journalistic society, went into great detail about how defoe through a complete tantrum and practically trashed the dug out. Wankers!

If those are Jol's actual quotes then that bit is the all important bit, speaks volumes about the man and how much he will take.

Everybody assumes that it was annoyance at being subbed that caused Defoe's little showing of emotions.

It may however have been annoyance with himself at failing to score whilst on the pitch. Nobody has spoken to him about it yet so we just don't know.

Even if it was at being subbed, Jol said last year, when Keane went through a similar incident, he expects his players to want to play and be on the pitch. That desire is a good thing, they just have to learn to handle the odd disappointment.
