Martin Jol in talks to replace Ronald Koeman at PSV

Gary Jacob

Martin Jol may not have been able to bring Champions League football to White Hart Lane during his three years at Tottenham Hotspur, but he may get the chance to pit his wits against Europe’s finest if he takes over as head coach of PSV Eindhoven.

The Dutchman, who was dismissed by Tottenham last week and handed a £4.7 million compensation package, held talks with the Dutch champions last night about succeeding Ronald Koeman, who left to take over at Valencia, of Spain, yesterday.

Meanwhile, Daniel Levy charged nearly £1 million in fees to the club for his work as chairman in the year up to the end of June. The irony of an increase from £775,000 to £950,000 will not be lost on supporters after the club’s handling of Jol’s departure.

The money was paid to Enic, the sports company that is the club’s largest shareholder and of which Levy is managing director. In the space of three years, the fee and pension package has increased from £250,000. The rise could be of interest to the shareholders who will attend the club’s extraordinary meeting on November 26. The club have previously defended the fees, arguing that they are in stronger shape now than when Enic took over in 2001.

Tottenham announced record figures for turnover and profit a fortnight ago, but the accounts reveal that was partly because of revenue from cup-ties. The rise in turnover of about £30 million came from reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Uefa Cup and the semi-finals of the Carling Cup last season. Enic, which has an 82 per cent stake in Tottenham, is understood to be looking to sell the club, which is valued at about £270 million.

Would this make it unlikely for him to manage Ajax in future? If so, I'd be a little surprised if he took it. Especially as the SuperJews could well need a manager next summer.

As for the Spurs players he'd take; it's all about the youngsters (KPB, Taarabt, BAE, Peckhart) on loan - and that would probably be a really good thing for them...and of course us. I doubt any of the senior players would give up the Premier wages...err, I mean, League.

I don't think so, as Koeman has coached both sides in recent years.

I really hope he gets this job and if he does I will become a PSV fan. In the next 18 months I get have a feeling Jols reputation will grow massively.

I have good ties with Ajax and Jol will not be managing them now or in the near future.

Was given a few reasons for this.

1 - He is from den haag and supports Feyenoord, both those will not go down very at all with Ajax fans and they would make his life very uncomfortable initially

2 - Ajax nearly always recruit ( koeman expection though and others ) from without, or recruit ex-Ajax players

3 - Egdar Davids and Johan Cruyff, 2 Ajax heavyweights, dont rate Jol

Isn't Cruyff meant to be a secret Feyenord fan? I'm sure I read he wouldn't retire from football until he'd played for them.

JOL IN LINE FOR PSV ROLE

By Gerrit van Leeuwen

PSV Eindhoven have confirmed Martin Jol is a candidate to replace Ronald Koeman as coach.

Jol was sacked by Tottenham last week, but could be offered a quick return to football by the Dutch champions.

Koeman has stepped down to take over at Valencia and PSV are hoping to make a swift appointment.

Earlier this week Jol admitted that he could return to Dutch football after being linked with a role at Ajax.

And, while refuting suggestions that Koeman's successor has already been decided, PSV general director Jan Reker acknowledged Jol is under consideration.

"I deny there is a replacement yet," Reker told a news conference.

"We are looking for a Dutch coach with international experience. It's clear Martin Jol is one of the coaches on our list.

"We hope to announce a new coach quickly."

Jol was in attendance at Chelsea's Carling Cup tie with Leicester City on Wednesday night following reports that he had held talks regarding the PSV post.

I think they are the worst bunch of players PSV have had for a long time. I'd say this season is going to be very close in Eredivisie, as it was last year. Feyenord have bought well, whilst Ajax and PSV don't seem as strong as in previous years, so it should be a very interesting championship.

Interesting stuff. Clearly I'm not too well versed in the history of the Dutch league, but this certainly strikes me as a good appointment for both sides and of course, I hope BMJ does well not only domestically but on a European level, too.
