From Sky Sports...Martin Jol is keeping tight-lipped on reports Tottenham Hotspur have made bids to sign Ricardo Rocha and Gareth Bale.

Speculation in Portugal has claimed that Spurs are close to completing a £3.3million deal for centre-half Rocha.

But while Jol is aware of the defender, he is refusing to fuel any rumours and is sticking to his policy of staying quiet about his transfer targets.

"I know his name, he is a good player from Benfica," Jol told Sky Sports News.

"My fellow countryman Ronald Koeman was his coach, but that is the only thing.

"There are other players at Benfica that I can tell you about.

"We never talk about players, and if he comes in, or if other players come in, we will let you know."

There have been reports that a Premiership club have lodged a £10million bid for Southampton's teenage full-back Bale.

Spurs have been mooted as admirers of the Wales international, but Jol was not expanding on any interest in the 17-year-old.

He added: "That is the same thing. If we would have done, we wouldn't have told you.

"That is private and a thing you have to do privately in England.

"If a deal will be done, we will tell you."

Come on MJ fingers crossed he'll be at the lane before the transfer window shuts

    2 man wheelbarrow

Bale has tons of talent, but I think we need someone now, not someone who will be a star in 2-3 years and then up and leave. 17 is very young to be an established defender in the Premiership.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to have him, but I suspect maybe we aren;t that team who proffered 10 mill.

I was wondering about the Rocha item -- I guess it is not a sealed deal and haven't heard about it anywhere else. From what i gather, he can be quite impressive indeed. You have to think he would be in before Daws when ledley is healthy.

I can't remember ever seeing Rocha play but at 28 and with the experience he has it points towards a good signing at the present moment.

I agree. Although I liked him, you could never have said the same about Davenport.

true bloody legend. BMJ is the man!!!

Bearing in mind he was quick to dismiss the Heinze link i'm hoping that his silence on this occasion suggests there is some interest.

Always enjoy hear the Jolly man make his statements..

Hopefully both those players come to lane, that would be great..

Bale looks suchs a prospect and although 10 mill would be alot I want us to make a signing like that, one that states that we really mean business not only off the pitch but also on it.

And as for Rocha, well he certainly seems like a capable defender (completely marking out Ronaldinho last year in CL) and able to play all over the back four!

according to sky sports we hae signed him now!

I don't think Rocha would start ahead of Dawson. I think he might start at left back from time to time, and I think he'd often be needed to cover for King, but I'd be surprised to see Dawson out of the first 11.

I think given that statement they're both on their way! Bale choosing us over ManU - how cool!!

    In Jol we trust!

BMJ is the man - absolutely the right thing to do to say bugger all until the deed is done.

Probably like me, you havent heard about him, because he is probably mediocre. At 28 if he was world class or even very good, we would have heard about him and other teams would have shown an interest as well.

After all, he is playing for club in Mourinho's homeland and even he isnt interested as he would rather play Eisen at CB !!

Why would't he want to sign for the best side outside of the top four? Think about it

Chelski - Cashley Cole & Wayne Bridge....both England internationals
Liverpool - Just got rid of Warnock and have Aurelio and Riise for that position.

    Pikeys - He's British.....nuff said!!!

Manure - The only other viable option, however they have recently purchased Evra and Heinze.

Spurs - BAE & YPO, whilst not poor they aren't International let alone world class. Who would you rather compete against.

Also, at the price being mooted, who could afford to keep him on the bench as opposed to fast tracking them into the team?

Finally, who has the best reputation for promoting young talent.

Spurs aren't a bad shout are they????

Yeah, but who had honestly heard of Chimbonda before Wigan signed him, and he's now one of the best right-backs in the league.

You tend to hear less about defenders in general as they are less exciting, ie. they don't score many.

The Bale possiable signing would be good news if it happens, 10 million is a ridiculous amount but what a message it would send out, and would give us another tremendous youngster.
